TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 15 University of Utah softball team scored five runs in the first inning and
Sydney Sandez fired seven innings of two-run ball to lead the Utes to a 6-2 triumph over the California Golden Bears on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Softball Tournament at Hillenbrand Stadium.
This victory bumps Utah's record to 35-13 in 2023 and sends them through to Friday's tournament semi-final.
"[Sydney] got a big time win today," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "She didn't have her best stuff early and worked hard through some things to get back on track. Going the distance today was more than what we could have asked for out of her. I'm so proud of her.
"Our first inning offensively was a perfect way to start the tourney. We cashed in on the walks with a perfectly executed bunt and a ball hit on the nose by Sophie. She continues to be hot and had an incredible 3-for-3 day today. I would have loved to score more of the runs we had out there on the bases today, but our defense did a nice job so thankfully we didn't need more than we got."
That outburst in the opening stanza started with two walks and an infield hit to load the bases for
Sophie Jacquez, who ripped a two-run double into right-center. Three batters later,
Abby Dayton sent a bouncer to the left side for an RBI infield single and
Shelbi Ortiz pushed across two more Utes by roping a double into center and Utah ended the first with a 5-0 edge.
The Golden Bears scratched out a run in their half of the first on a double steal, but their chance to continue cutting into the Utah lead in that frame ended when
Kendall Lundberg caught Diamond Holland trying to steal third for the third out. Sandez then settled in and retired six of the next batters she faced to keep her team's four-run edge intact.
In Utah's half of the fourth,
Karlie Davison launched a solo shot to center to make the score 6-1 and Sandez then proceeded to thwart two attempted rallies by the Golden Bears. She used a groundout and a flyout to extricate herself from a two-on, one-out spot in the fifth, then she induced a popup and another groundout to squash an attempted uprising in the sixth, when California had second-and-third with one out.
The final comeback attempt for the Bears came in the seventh, when a hit batter and two singles tallied California's second run and brought the tying run in to the on-deck circle, only for Sandez to set down the next three hitters and lock up Utah's spot in the semis.
