SALT LAKE CITY – Despite putting together a three-run second-inning rally that gave them the lead, the No. 12 University of Utah softball team was unable to hold on to that advantage and suffered a 4-3 defeat to the San Diego State Aztecs in the opening game of the Salt Lake City Super Regional series, which took place Friday evening at the Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Utah will try and keep its season alive on Saturday, when they'll meet the Aztecs for a 3 p.m. clash.
"We didn't play great today," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "We've been playing really great, so bad timing to have a bad day. There were a lot of good moments, but it got a little tight and my team didn't play very loose and the moment got a little big and it got away from us. We did all those things not so great and still only lost by a run. I like our opportunity to make those adjustments tomorrow and get back on that role we've been on for quite a while."
The Aztecs were the first team to dent home plate, using a single, a walk and a pair of errors to tally two runs in the first inning, putting the Utes behind for the first time in the NCAA Tournament.
Utah responded in the second, which started with a
Sophie Jacquez double. Two batters later, Jacquez scored on an error that also sent
Abby Dayton to third and Dayton tied the game when
Haley Denning beat out a bunt hit. A
Shelbi Ortiz sacrifice fly resulted in the third run of the frame and the Utes grabbed a 3-2 lead.
SDSU had a response in the fourth courtesy of a walk, a single and a two-run double to right off the bat of A.J. Murphy. The Aztecs had chances to add to their lead when they loaded the bases in the fourth and fifth innings with two outs, but
Mariah Lopez maneuvered out of both jams.
Unfortunately for the Utes, they couldn't crack the combination to pitchers Allie Light or Dee Dee Hernandez. Neither pitcher allowed a runner to get past first base over the final five innings. Hernandez ended the night by retiring the side in the seventh with the tying run on first.
