EUGENE, Ore. –
Karlie Davison and
Julia Jimenez both blasted a pair of homers and
Sarah Ladd tossed a complete game as the No. 19 University of Utah softball team toppled the No. 13 Oregon Ducks by an 8-2 score on Saturday evening in Pac-12 Conference action at Jane Sanders Stadium.
This triumph puts the Utes at 14-9 in the Pac-12, their highest win total ever in conference play since they joined the league in 2012, and their overall mark is 33-13. This also locks up Utah's first-ever series win over Oregon.
"Win No. 14!" said head coach
Amy Hogue. "That's what today was about for us. Getting that 14th win in the PAC-12 to get us to the highest win total we've had since joining this conference was a great accomplishment. It's been fun to watch our players work hard to be able to have a chance to perform well on a big stage like this. And today we had a lot of those successes.
"I'm proud of [
Julia Jimenez], who came up clutch today at the plate, and for Karlie to get comfortable again in the box. They both have a lot of power and have worked hard with DJ and it's paying off in big ways."
Neither Ladd nor Oregon starter Stevie Hansen budged in the first two innings, both putting up a pair of zeroes, but in the third, Davison struck her first blow. With a runner on first, Utah's freshman shortstop pulverized a 3-2 pitch, sending it well over the wall in left-center to break the scoreless tie and put the Utes ahead, 2-0.
Ladd maintained her shutout through the first four innings, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first by inducing back-to-back popups, then wriggling out of a two-on, nobody-out plight in the fourth. A Terra McGowan solo shot got the home team on the board in the fifth, but that was Oregon's only extra base hit through the first six innings. Ladd would end the night having stranded eight runners total.
"Having Sarah go seven innings was the highlight for me today," said Hogue. "She was able to throw some big pitches in crucial situations to stop their chances of plating runs when they set the table. Paige [Parker] once again called a gem and the defense has been perfect in Eugene so far."
McGowan's homer brought the Ducks to within a run, but the Utes then used their power stroke to blow this tensile tilt wide open. First, Jimenez got that run right back with a solo smash of her own in the sixth. In the seventh, Davison again came up with one on and tore into a 1-1 offering for her second two-run tater of the day. Four batters later, Jimenez hit a moonshot to left for a three-run dinger and Utes suddenly had an 8-1 edge. Ladd took care of the rest by getting the final three outs to clinch a series win.
"Tomorrow," said Hogue, "we have a chance to win again and continue building our confidence going into the tournament next week in Tucson.
