EUGENE, Ore. –
Mariah Lopez fired the 17th seven-inning no-hitter in program history, the first since 2012, and the No. 19 University of Utah softball team finished a off a sweep of the No. 13 Oregon Ducks with a 2-0 triumph on Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Jane Sanders Stadium.
This makes the second time in 2023 the Utes have swept a ranked team and it's the first time since 2017 they've collected multiple sweeps over ranked foes. It is also the first time Utah has ever swept Oregon. The Utes conclude the regular season 34-13 overall and 15-9 and in third place in the Pac-12.
"Today was incredible," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "Ali hit a homerun on her birthday and we manufactured the second run perfectly. Two runs ended up being all we needed because of Mariah and our fantastic defense.
"The first three outs were probably the hardest to get. [
Julia Jimenez] snagged a liner from their lead-off [hitter] and Sophie robbed a homer and then things got a little easier for our defense. Mariah got stronger as the game went. She finished the game with three straight strikeouts which was such a great way to lock up the no-hitter and complete the sweep."
For Lopez, this is the first no-hitter of her Utah career and the 30th overall in program history. It is the 17th seven-inning no-hitter thrown by the Utes, as well as the team's second of the season, marking the first time since 2009 the Utes have held multiple opponents hitless in the same season.
Utah's starter received all the run support she would need in the third inning, when
Abby Dayton started the stanza by singling, took second on a wild pitch, was sacrificed to third and hurried home on a
Haley Denning sacrifice fly. One batter later,
Aliya Belarde whacked a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right for a 2-0 advantage.
Lopez encountered a couple early obstacles in the first innings before she settled into a groove the rest of the way. With two outs in the first, Oregon's Terra McGowan sent a long drive into right, but a leaping grab by
Sophie Jacquez robbed McGowan of a home run and kept the Ducks hitless. In the second, a pair of two-out walks provided the home team with another opportunity, but Lopez struck out Tehya Bird to end the threat.
From the third inning on, Lopez allowed only a single baserunner, setting down 15 of the 16 hitters she faced to finish with a spotless final line that included six strikeouts. The junior Arizona finished her masterpiece with a perfect sixth, followed by a seventh inning in which she struck out the side.
"I couldn't be prouder of where this team finished in Pac-12 play," said Hogue. "We were picked to take eighth and proved that nobody really knew what we had planned to accomplish this year. We are peaking at the right time and can't wait to get to Tucson and make a run in the tournament."
