SALT LAKE CITY – Cole Gambill broke a 7-7 tie for BYU with a ninth inning leadoff homer to spark the visiting bats as the Utah baseball team fell to the Cougars by a 13-7 score on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Utah led by a 7-3 score after seven innings, but BYU heated up with 10 runs in the final two frames to take the rubber match of the teams' three-game season series.
Jayden Kiernan was 4-for-4 in the cleanup spot for Utah with a double, RBI and a run scored. It was Kiernan's team-leading 21
st multi-hit game of the season, third four-hit performance and marked his 28th straight game reaching base safely. Leadoff man
Kai Roberts was 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice on the night.
Landon Frei,
Jake Gish and
Matt Flaharty also strung together multi-hit lines with Flaharty and Roberts also smacking doubles.
The Utes trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the third inning but leveled the score in the home half, thanks in part to some small ball. Kiernan laced a one-out single up the middle to put
TJ Clarkson on third base, then
Karson Bodily dropped down a safety squeeze to score Clarkson.
Cameron Gurney was next up and singled to bring in Kiernan to bring the teams all square at 3-3.
That score remained through the middle innings as the Utah pitching staff cruised along—retiring 14 BYU batters in a row between the third and seventh innings.
Merit Jones allowed three singles to begin the third inning but answered with three straight strikeouts, then retired the side 1-2-3 in the fourth.
Bransen Kuehl worked through the fifth in order and then fanned the side 1-2-3 in the sixth. Then left-hander
Bryson Van Sickle came on for the seventh and surrendered just a single amidst striking out the side.
Utah pulled in front, 7-3, thanks to a four-run sixth. Roberts reached on a bunt single that brought in Flaharty, but the throw to first got away and not only allowed
Bruer Webster to score but also put Roberts on third base. Frei then singled to score Roberts and two batters later Frei came in on a base knock off the bat of Kiernan.
Flaharty found his way into scoring position in the seventh but was ultimately stranded at second base.
BYU tied things back up at seven with a four-run eighth inning, then Gambill's leadoff homer in the ninth sparked a six-run frame. In the bottom of the ninth,
Jake Gish led off with a single and Roberts worked a walk, but that would be all for Utah in its final at bat.
Micah Ashman received the loss for the Utes.
Utah will return to Smith's Ballpark on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. non-conference game vs. New Mexico State.
