SALT LAKE CITY – The 2023-24 schedule has been officially set for the University of Utah men's golf team and head coach
Garrett Clegg has cobbled together a slate that will include 11 regular season tournaments before postseason play begins on April 26-28 at the Pac-12 Championships.
"I believe our schedule is the strongest it has been in my time here at the U," said Clegg, "We have a great mix of events across the country, with 11 tournaments in nine different states. I'm excited to see how this team will rise to the challenge that is presented to them. We have a fun mix of returners and newcomers that should make for an extremely competitive roster."
Utah's 11 events are one more than was on their regular season schedule in 2022-23 and they'll be traveling to four tournaments that will be hosted by one of their Pac-12 rivals, including the OSU Invitational, which was won by
Javier Barcos in 2022.
The Utes will start their 2023-24 campaign on September 10-11 in Minneapolis, the site of the Gopher Invitational, which, in 2022, consisted of three rounds at the Windsong Farm Golf Club. The last time Utah participated in this competition was in 2019, when a pair of Utes, Tristan Mandur and
Jesper von Reedtz, posted top-10 finishes.
Utah's second and third tournaments of the season will be return trips to spots they visited in 2022-23, starting with the Husky Invitational on Sept. 18-19, then competing on Oct. 2-3 at the Fighting Irish Classic at the Warren Golf Course, where the Utes' previous campaign began.
The second October event for Clegg's crew is the OSU Invitational on Oct. 9-10 and Barcos will have the opportunity to defend the title he earned at the tournament's 2022 edition. The senior from Spain accomplished that goal with 54 exemplary holes that started with a 4-under 67 and concluded with a final round 70 that gave him sole possession of the individual championship, the first of his collegiate career. Barcos and his teammates will close out the fall at the Visit Stockton Invitational, which is scheduled for Oct. 16-18.
The spring portion of the slate begins at familiar destination, the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii, which will be held Feb. 14-17. Clegg's golfers combined to post their lowest team score of the season at that event a year ago, shooting 19-under, including a mark of minus-15 on the final day.
Braxton Watts also put together his best performance of 2022-23, tying for 10th.
On Feb. 26-27, the Utes will make their first-ever trip to Georgia under Clegg's watch for the Invitational at the Ford, hosted by Georgia State, before starting March at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Oregon, where Utah tied for second in March of 2023. They were again led by Watts at that event, who carded Utah's lowest score to finish in a tie for 12th.
On March 28-30, the Utes will hit the links at one of the most competitive events in the country, The Goodwin, which will take place in California. Clegg will have his team back in The Golden State on April 8-9 for the UCSB Invitational, Utah's first time participating in an event hosted by the Gauchos since 2015. The Utes will conclude their regular season on April 12-13 at Arizona State's Thunderbird Collegiate.
Utah's postseason will begin on April 26-28 at the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships, which will be held at the Desert Forest Golf Club. The Utes will be aiming to use that tournament as a springboard towards NCAA Regionals, which are scheduled for May 13-15, followed by the NCAA Championships on May 22-29.
