SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Volleyball opened its 2023 home season with a win over UNLV in four sets (19-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-23) at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Lauren Jardine recorded the first 20-plus kill match of her career after tallying a career-high 21 kills, while three Utes hit above .450 in the match to lead the team.
Utah fell into a 13-6 hole to start the first set after UNLV rattled off a 6-1 run. The Utes were able to keep within four points after battling back, but couldn't get any closer as the Rebels used four-straight points to push ahead 22-14. Utah put together three points in a row at the end of the frame to force a UNLV timeout with the lead cut to 24-19, but a kill from the Rebels ended the set. Utah hit .333 as a group, led by Jardine's seven kills on .778 hitting. Although the strong offensive efforts from Utah, the Rebels hit just as well at a .387 hitting percentage.
The second set went back and forth until Utah scored five in a row, pulling ahead 16-12. A run of four consecutive points for the Utes later on extended the lead in the second set to 21-14, and the home team never looked back as they would take the frame 25-17 to even the match. Jardine continued her hot-hitting with six kills on .556 hitting, while
Kamry Bailey pitched in four kills on .500 hitting. The team as a whole combined for a .435 clip in the second set.
The momentum continued into the third set and the Ute offense continued firing on all cylinders. Utah jumped out to a 9-3 lead, and although UNLV trimmed the score to just 14-11, the Utes pushed back out ahead 22-12 behind six consecutive points. Utah went on to win the set 25-14 after hitting .345 in the frame. Gibadlo posted four kills on five swings with no errors to lead the group.
Both teams' offenses were firing again in the fourth set similar to the first, but it was the Utes struck first as they posted a 7-1 run, which included three kills apiece from Gibadlo and
Allie Olsen, to lead 12-7 lead. Utah held on to the lead as the set began winding down and leading 22-17, the Utes gave up a 4-0 run to force a Ute timeout with the lead sitting at just one point.
Jardine's 20th kill of the match gave Utah a sideout, while back-to-back service errors brought the score to 24-23 for the Utes. Jardine connected on a kill once again to secure Utah's first home win of the season. The Utes finished the night never hitting below .333 in any set and had three Utes hit above .450 in the match. Utah hit .364 as a group in the win.
Jardine posted a career best 21 kills for her first career match of 20-plus kill, while hitting .472 on Friday night. She also added six digs, two aces and a block. Gibadlo tied a career best 12 kills and recorded a career high .458 hitting percentage. Rounding out the trio of hot-hitters, Olsen tallied nine kills on .533 hitting.
Viktoria Wahlgren dished out 41 assists, which ties a career high, along with four digs.
Emrie Satuala led the team with four blocks, while also adding five kills in her first match as a Ute.
Vanessa Ramirez led both teams with 16 digs.
Before hosting their annual Utah Classic, the Utes hit the road after Labor Day weekend for a match at Portland State on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The match begins at 1 p.m. MT at Viking Pavilion in Portland. Then, Utah welcomes Tennessee State, UC Santa Barbara, and San Francisco on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, at the Huntsman Center for the Utah Classic.
