The Utah women's tennis team is set to commence their 2024 spring season this weekend at the Eccles Tennis Center. They will host a series of three matches, beginning with back-to-back games against Montana State and Utah Tech on Friday, Jan. 19. LAST TIME OUT
Utah hosted the ITA Regionals Oct. 18-22 of the 2023 fall season.
Marcela Lopez advanced her way to the finals after defeating top-seed Yujia Huang from BYU. Despite falling during the finals against Noesjka Brink from Wyoming, Lopez's performance secured her a spot in the ITA Fall Nationals. Also in regionals,
Kaila Barksdale reached the semifinals in the main draw, defeating opponents from Northern Arizona, Boise State, and Denver, before succumbing to Wyoming's Brink. Katherine Lyman and
Sara Akid also secured wins in the main singles draw, taking down opponents from Colorado State, Northern Arizona, and Montana State.
Emma Kamper triumphed in the singles B draw, securing the title with a final win over Nevada's Wiem Boubaker. In doubles, the teams of Sara Akid and Ana Cruz and Lopez/Lyman achieved multiple wins, with Akid/Cruz advancing to the quarterfinals after defeating opponents from Northern Arizona and New Mexico.
THE UTES
Utah women's tennis is poised for an electric spring season, with a roster that ranges from new talent to seasoned experience. New to the Utes in the fall, freshmen
Sara Akid,
Emma Kamper, and
Isabella Pitchford. Utah also welcomed three transfers in the fall: sophomore
Yuhan Liu from Arkansas, senior
Kat Lyman from Xavier, and graduate student
Ana Luiza Cruz. Alongside these additions, we have the continued presence of returning players: sophomore
Kaila Barksdale, sophomore
Marcela Lopez, and junior
Samantha Horwood.
IN THE RANKS
At the conclusion of fall action, Utah's
Marcela Lopez was ranked No. 55 in the country after claiming a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women's tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 45-41 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera's leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera's squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with
Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and
Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.
SCOUTING MONTANA STATE
The Bobcats will head into the match with a 2-0 record, topping North Dakota and Seattle University to start off the 2024 spring season. During the 2022-23 season, Montana State posted a 5-13 overall record, with a 2-6 conference record. The Utes have only faced the Bobcats once in 2007, boasting a strong 7-0 victory.
SCOUTING UTAH TECH
Utah Tech will kick off their season against Utah on Friday. In the 2022-23 season, the Trailblazers logged a 2-19 record overall, not winning any of their nine matches within conference play. The Utes have competed against Utah Tech on seven previous accounts, claiming victory in each match. The two last met in January of 2023, where Utah posted a 5-0 win over the Trailblazers.
SCOUTING IDAHO STATE
The Begnals will begin their season with a match against Utah State on Saturday, just before taking on the Utes. Idaho State notched a 10-9 overall record and 5-3 conference record in the 2022-23 season. The Utes and Bengals have a two-match history, with Utah claiming victory in both. The Utes last faced the Bengals in January 2023, where Utah posted a 7-0 victory over Idaho State.
NEXT UP
Utah will hit the road to Michigan to take on the Wolverines Jan. 26 in the ITA Kickoff. Utah will then play either Purdue or Arkansas. Utah's next home match will be Friday, Feb. 9 against rival BYU.
