SALT LAKE CITY – A near triple-double with a career-high 24 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists from
Deivon Smith saw the Utah men's basketball team snap an 11-game skid against the Oregon Ducks with an exciting 80-77 victory Sunday afternoon inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
In its last meeting against Oregon at home in the Pac-12 Era, Utah picked up just its third win over the Ducks since joining the league. It was also only the second time the Runnin' Utes have swept the Oregon schools at home and third time overall in that span. Additionally, Sunday's win was just the second time the Ducks have been swept on the road by the mountain schools in the Pac-12 Era (2012-13).
Scoring was a premium in the first-half of the game with both Utah (14-5, 5-3 Pac-12) and Oregon committing a combined 15 turnovers along with 10 lead changes and six ties.
Utah went ahead early thanks to an 8-0 run after
Gabe Madsen's corner 3-pointer that forced Oregon to call a timeout with 13:55 on the clock. The scoring evened out a bit afterwards as Utah hit a scoring drought – which allowed Oregon (13-5, 5-2 Pac-12) to cut into the lead. The back-and-forth started between the Runnin' Utes and Ducks before Smith drained a half-court shot on the far side to bring Utah within 33-32 of UO at the break.
The second half saw Utah tie the Ducks twice, once at 42-42 when
Keba Keita had back-to-back and-1 conversions, and then a second time at 48-48 when
Ben Carlson drained two-straight 3-pointers before ultimately taking the 60-57 lead with 7:34 left to go. The Utes pushed their lead to 63-59 out of the break before an 8-0 run by Oregon saw it go back up 67-63 out of the UO timeout.
Smith then took the game into his own hands and answered with a 9-0 run by himself – including back-to-back triples to give the Runnin' Utes a 72-67 edge with 2:02 to play. Oregon got within a point of the Utes twice before
Cole Bajema iced the game with four-straight free-throws to give the Utes the victory.
Utah showed lots of poise in the final 12 minutes of play finding high-percentage shots by knocking down 11-of-14 from the field while Oregon was 9-for-23 during that same stretch.
Bajema finished with 13 points and a season-high 8 rebounds – including 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Keita,
Branden Carlson and
Ben Carlson, who knocked a career-high 4-for-6 from beyond the arc in the win, all ended up with dozen points for Utah.
BY THE NUMBERS
Utah was much better at the foul line on Sunday, knocking down 15-of-22 … ninth time this season Utah has shot .500 or better in a game – all of which were wins … the game finished with 15 lead changes and 9 ties … just the second time this season in league play that Utah has had 5 players reach double-figures in a game.
