SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Volleyball posts a statement win, taking down #18 Baylor 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21), making it the second consecutive top 20 sweep for the Utes. Utah has won back-to-back top 25 matches on their home floor for the first time since 2019, after defeating then #7 Kentucky (3-0) and #23 Cal Poly (3-2) to begin the season during the Utah Classic.
Â
Improving to 15-2 on the season and 5-1 in Big 12 competition, Utah has now won three consecutive matches by way of the 3-0 decision and a total of 10 sweeps on the season.
Â
Utah took an early lead in set one, using a
Claranne Fechter service rally, getting kills from
Lauren Jardine and
Kamryn Gibadlo to find some separation. The Utes maintained a four-point advantage at the midway point of the set, winning the race to 15 and holding a 16-12 advantage coming off the
Rianne Vos kill. Baylor battled back in the late stages of the set, taking the first lead of the match at 18-19, as the two sides would continue to trade points. Utah found some separation after the set was tied at 21, the Utes closed out the set getting a spark from the Gibadlo ace followed by back-to-back blocks coming from
Emrie Satuala/
Kamry Bailey, and Satuala/Vos. Satuala was a staple in the early action, putting down the final kill for the Utes, sealing the first-set victory, 25-21.
Â
There was an early battle between the two sides in the second set before Utah strung together an eight-point rally to give themselves an 11-4 lead. Taking advantage of early Baylor errors, Utah ignited the rally with a Gibadlo ace, getting a pair of kills from Satuala with five errors by the Bears. Utah kept its foot on the gas, stringing together a five-point run later in the set, including three consecutive aces from Satuala. Leading the Bears, 16-5, after the incredible Satuala service run, the two sides would bounce points back and forth as Utah's own
Rianne Vos put away the 25
th point, taking the set, 25-14.
Â
It was another close battle to begin the third set, as the Bears took an early 4-2 lead. Utah responded to the challenge, putting together a four-point run, regaining the lead at 6-4, taking advantage of a pair of Baylor errors and getting kills from Gibadlo and Satuala. The Utah offense maintained each momentum from one set to the next, withstanding each Baylor attack, as the Utes extended their lead up to 18-11. The Utes completed the sweep of the Bears, as Bailey, Jardine and Gibadlo each tallied kills down the stretch. Utah continued to take advantage of the Baylor mistakes, securing the sweep with a 25-21 set win.Â
