SALT LAKE CITY – The fourth-seeded Utah Volleyball team dominated its first-round match of the 2024 NCAA Volleyball Championships, sweeping the College of Charleston 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-16). This marks the first postseason sweep for the Utes since 2019 when Utah swept BYU in the second round of the tournament in Provo. The Utes have now won eight matches in a row, taking their last four home matches by a straight sweep. Â

"Very pleased with the win," said head coach
Beth Launiere. "That was a fairly typical Utah volleyball match in terms of we get contributions from a lot of different players at different times through the course of the match, whether it was a big kill by somebody on the right side, or the middle coming up big at certain points, or left sides finding the court, or some big digs...College of Charleston played a very good match. I felt like their block was a big issue for us, and we had to deal with that, and we had to figure out how to hit high and with more range, because they were imposing their block on us, and I thought they played a good match, and it's a really, really good team and such a great program. So congratulations to them."

Utah dominated set one, capturing the lead through the early going and never relinquishing the advantage the entire set. The Utes took an early 5-1 lead in set one with the help of three kills by
Kamryn Gibadlo.
Kamry Bailey provided two kills that would keep the Utes in front 12-5. Utah kept the momentum on their side with an
Emrie Satuala kill, as Utah maintained a 15-8 advantage. Charleston answered back with a six-point run, cutting the Utah lead down to three at 18-15. Kills by
Rianne Vos and
Allie Olsen would stop the run and keep the Utes in front 21-16. Down the stretch, Utah saw kills land from Vos, Satuala, and
Lauren Jardine, helping elevate Utah to a 25-21 win in the opening set.
Â
Ella Biggs stepped back to the service line to start off set two, starting the action with an ace for the Utes. Utah built off the ace and captured an early 5-2 lead with kills from Jardine and Olsen. Jardine added two more kills, putting the Utes ahead 12-7. Answering a three-point Charleston run, Jardine served a pair of back-to-back aces to keep Utah in front 15-10. Keeping momentum on the home side, Gibadlo, Bailey, and Satuala would record kills moving the score to 18-16. Utah won four of the next five points to extend the lead to 22-17.
Claranne Fechter finished the set the same way it started, planting an ace on the Charleston defense and giving the Utes the 25-19 win.
Â
Set three started with the Utes grabbing an early 4-1 lead with kills coming from Gibadlo and Satuala. Bailey and Olsen each put away kills to help increase the Utah lead out to 8-3. Building on the lead, Utah would go on a five-point run highlighted by a pair of Jardine kills extending the advantage to 15-7. Charleston would respond with a four point run of their own to bring the score to 15-11. Utah responded to the Cougars run by going on their second five-point run of the set accompanied by three Gibadlo kills moving the score to 20-11.
