CLEARWATER, Fla. – Starting pitchers
Mariah Lopez and
Sarah Ladd combined to toss 10 innings of scoreless ball and nine different Utes picked base hits as the No. 13 University of Utah softball team made short work of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 9-3, and the N.C. Central Eagles, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon on day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
The Utes have now improved to 3-1 so far in 2024.
"We showed up a little differently today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "More like ourselves, with some energy and excitement that was missing in the first day. The nerves were settled a bit more, which helped to get some better results at the plate and in the circle. We aren't very refined as a team yet, but are definitely making progress."
Utah vs. Notre Dame
In the first-ever live collegiate softball game on MLB Network, the Utes put on a show for viewing audience both at the plate in the circle.
On offense, the Utes racked up 18 hits, their most in a game since 2019, and the onslaught started in the very first inning when
Aliya Belarde singled and scored on an error and
Karlie Davison tacked on another run with an RBI double. Two innings, later
Haley Denning scampered home a wild pitch and
Kendall Lundberg lofted an RBI double into the left field corner for a 4-0 Utah edge.
The Utes continued padding their lead in the fourth courtesy of a two-bagger from
Julia Jimenez that plated a pair and
Leilani Melendez added a two-RBI double of her own in the fifth before she touched home when Belarde belted her second triple of the afternoon, making the score 9-0. Belarde is the 10th Ute to tie the program record of two triples in one game.
Holding the Fighting Irish at bay in the meantime was Lopez, who benefited from a double play and a runner thrown out at the plate in the first, then escaped a first-and-third, one-out jam in the fourth. The senior southpaw needed only 49 pitches to get through four scoreless stanzas before handing pitching chores over
Raci Miranda, who collected the final nine outs for her first Utah save.
Utah vs. N.C. Central
Against the Eagles, it was
Sarah Ladd's turn to take control of the circle and she did so by firing six scoreless innings in which she didn't give up a single extra-base hit and K'd five. She picked up two strikeouts in the first inning, then induced a double play to end the second. Ladd didn't all the opposition to get a runner into scoring position until the fifth, when she used a popup and a strikeout to strand a pair and she ended her evening by wriggling out of another jam in the sixth.
For the fourth straight contest, the Utes pushed across a first-inning run, this one coming on a fielder's choice that plated Denning. A wild pitch allowed Davison to cross the plate in the fourth and
Kaylah Nelsen tallied her second RBI of the night with run-scoring safety in the fifth.
In the sixth, Melendez upped her team's advantage to four with a knock that sent home
Reese Lee and, one frame later, RBI singles courtesy of
Abby Dayton and
Shelbi Ortiz, followed by an RBI groundout off the bat of
Kendall Lundberg provided the final margin.
Taylor Jacobs brought the night to an end by pitching a perfect bottom of the seventh.
"I thought Mariah and Sarah had great outings today," said Hogue, "both getting a win in the circle, as well as Karlie and Denning on the offensive side."
