CLEARWATER, Fla. –
Mariah Lopez twirled six innings of three-hit ball and led the No. 13 University of Utah softball team to a 3-1 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
The Utes conclude the season's first weekend with a 4-1 record.
"Leaving Florida with another win was very important for this group," said coach
Amy Hogue. "I was extremely proud of the way Mariah completely controlled today's game. She didn't get the run support I would have liked, but stayed steady enough to win a close one for us. We sprayed quite a few hits today but couldn't find a way to string them together, which we will need to do in order to win consistently."
Lopez was razor sharp from the start, striking out two in a scoreless first inning, and she permitted only a single hit through the first four frames. The senior lefty stranded two runners in the fifth before Iowa broke through with an unearned run in the sixth, but Lopez stopped the rally there to complete the outing that would earn her win No. 2 in 2024.
On offense, the Utes scratched out three runs to give their starter the run support she needed.
Abby Dayton sparked her team's first rally in the second with a lead-off double and scored two batters later on a
Kendall Lundberg single.
Utah increased its lead to 2-0 in the fourth on a bunt single off the bat of
Haley Denning that plated Dayton and the Utes' third tally came across in the sixth on another hit from Denning.
Sarah Ladd took care of the final three outs to earn her first save.
Ladd's effort completed a weekend in which she pitched to a 0.47 ERA in 15.0 innings, earning her all-tournament honors.
"I was super happy with the way
Sarah Ladd came in and closed the game for us," said Hogue. "She had an ERA of 0.60 this weekend and looked about as good as I've seen her. Denning also got off to a great start leading our team by batting close to .600 this weekend. She also stole 9 bases and scored 7 times which definitely helped us with each of our 4 wins we grabbed."
