LAS VEGAS – The Utah men's basketball team fought all night inside T-Mobile Arena but ultimately fell to Colorado 72-58 in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament Thursday.
The opening minutes saw both teams go back-and-forth before the Buffs rattled off a 13-0 run to lead the Utes 21-7 despite a timeout by Utah (19-14) at the 13:26 mark.
Deivon Smith would eventually put an end to the scoring drought that lasted 4:23 minutes when the ball went inside and around the horn from
Hunter Erickson for the 3-pointer.
Utah slowly chipped away at the Colorado lead via a trio of 3-pointers from three different players and a bucket from
Keba Keita to get within 27-18 heading into the 7:42 media break. The offense seemed to have been ignited after the third 3-pointer and reeled off a 15-0 run that was capped off by an offensive board by
Ben Carlson and tough finish by
Gabe Madsen to force a CU timeout with Utah on top 28-27 with 5:07 left on the clock.
The back-and-forth returned from that point on with Utah heading into the break down 33-30 after seven lead changes occurred in the first 20 minutes of action.
Utah kept within striking distance of Colorado (23-9) in the early moments of the second half, but an 8-2 run by the buffs saw them take the first double-digit lead by either team 48-38 before a drive to the rack by Madsen made it 48-40 with 11:43 left to play.
The Runnin' Utes continued to chip away at the Colorado lead and got as close as 52-47 on four-straight points from
Branden Carlson, but back-to-back 3-pointers from CU's KJ Simpson saw the deficit go back up to 58-49 with 6:40 on the clock.
A shooting slump by the Utes saw Colorado take advantage and went on a 12-6 spurt to push its lead back up to 70-55 with 2:15 left to play before the Buffs ended Utah's run in Vegas.
Br. Carlson finished the game with 13 points and 6 rebounds while Erickson chipped with 13 points as well on 5-of-10 shooting.
Cole Bajema added 10 points himself to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Utah. Madsen was just shy with 9 points and 5 boards.
With the loss the Runnin' Utes head back to SLC and will await their fate for the NIT and if they'll get the opportunity to host inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center next Tuesday (March 19) or next Wednesday (March 20). Selection Show for the NIT is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (MDT) on ESPN2.
