SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team scored in every inning, including three different four-spots, as the Utes defeated Northern Colorado by a score of 20-6 on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark. The contest was called after seven innings and gave Utah (13-6) its fourth win in the last six games.
It was a season-high runs scored for the team and first 20-run game since the 29-14 win at BYU in April 2023. Utah also had 15 hits on the night, coming off a 16-hit effort in Sunday's come-from-behind victory over Oregon State.
Kai Roberts tied a career-high with five RBI during a 2-for-5 night, scoring twice and working a walk as well.
Karson Bodily was 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk and scored a career-best four times, leading the way as 10 different Utes contributed a run. Roberts,
Drake Digiorno and
TJ Clarkson all doubled in the game.
Digiorno tied a season-best with three RBI, Clarkson knocked in three, while both scored three runs as did
Core Jackson.
Roberts also stole three bases, bringing his season total to 11 which matches his final line from the 2023 season.
It was a staff day for the Utes on the mound.
Jaden Harris received the win (3-0) in dealing the first 2.2 innings, before
Jackson Elder came on for 2.1 innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts.
Bransen Kuehl surrendered just a hit in the final 2.0 innings of the game and struck out two Bears in his outing.
The teams traded runs in the first two innings as Northern Colorado pushed one across in the opening frame.
Michael Davinni then had a two-run single in the home half of the first, scoring Digiorno and Roberts for a 2-1 lead.
After the visitors leveled the score at two in the second inning, Utah put up its first of three consecutive four-run innings. Roberts had an RBI groundout before back-to-back doubles from Digiorno and Clarkson, then a UNC throwing error allowed the Utes to tack on another run.
Though the Bears pulled back within a run in the third inning, Utah tacked on four runs again in the third and fourth to put the game out of reach. The Utes added another run in the fifth inning and a five-spot in the sixth to wrap up the scoring for the night.
Then in the top of the seventh, a double play followed by a groundout for UNC brought the ballgame to a close.
