The First Pitch: Things to Know
A five-game home stand wraps up for the Utah Baseball team this week as the Utes host Northern Colorado for a pair of midweek contests inside Smith's Ballpark.
- Utah is coming off of a three-game set against then-No. 3 Oregon State. The Utes capped off the weekend with a 14-11 victory on Sunday; the come-from-behind win saw Utah erase a 9-0 deficit, its largest comeback win since joining the Pac-12 Conference.
- Though Gary Henderson's club fell to the Beavers in the first two games, Utah battled into the late innings both on Friday and Saturday. The Utes carried a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning of game one before OSU rallied for a 7-5 win, before the teams were scoreless through seven innings on Saturday in what became an 8-1 decision for the visitors.
- Center fielder Kai Roberts (Lehi, Utah) continues to show incredible strides from his junior season, entering this midweek series with a team-best .366 batting average—exactly 100 points above where Roberts finished the 2023 campaign. It's the highest average Roberts has posted as a Ute and includes nine doubles, which rank second in the Pac-12 and in the top-25 nationally.
- Roberts slashed .545 / .615 / 1.455 during the Washington State series, going 6-for-11 with a double, a homer in each of the three games, five RBI and a stolen base. Four of his six hits that weekend went for extra bases.
- Entering the week, second baseman Bruer Webster is the only Power Conference player (meeting NCAA minimums) to have not yet struck out this season. Webster has had 44 at bats to date; Cameron Gurney had a similar run in 2023, going 49 at bats before his first strikeout.
- NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List member Micah Ashman (Sandy, Utah) closed out the series finale vs. Oregon State this past Sunday for his Pac-12-leading fifth save of the season. The season total also ranks third in the country, while Ashman's 14 career saves tie him with Dylan Drachler (2014-17) for second-most in recorded program history. Tyler Wagner holds the program record with 17 from 2010-12.
- Utah's pitching staff continues to rank among the league's best as the home schedule gets underway. At 4.32, the team's ERA ranks third in the Pac-12, while 3.44 walks allowed per nine innings checks in at second-best in the conference and 28th across college baseball.
- The Utes have been more aggressive on the basepaths this season and the numbers show: Utah's 32 stolen bases lead the league and are already past the halfway mark of last year's total (62 stolen bases).
- Following the two-game series with Northern Colorado, Utah heads out to the Bay Area to resume Pac-12 play with a three-game set at California from Friday through Sunday.
