The First Pitch: Things to Know
Coming off a five-game home stand at Smith's Ballpark, the Utah Baseball team returns to the road this weekend as the club resumes Pac-12 Conference play with a three-game series at California.
Due to forecasted weather, first pitch in Friday's series opener has been moved to 2:05 p.m. MT inside Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley, while Saturday's game is set for 3:05 p.m. MT and the finale on Sunday will be played at 2:05 p.m. MT.
- Utah has won three straight games and five of its last seven, coming off a two-game midweek sweep of Northern Colorado. The Utes scored a season-high 20 runs in Tuesday's series opener--a 20-6 contest that was called after seven innings—before walking off in a 7-6, 12-inning battle on Wednesday.
- Drake Digiorno provided the walk-off heroics with a double that scored Kai Roberts from first base. It was the third run Roberts scored in the two-game series and capped off a series where Roberts had four RBI with two outs.
- Lefty Micah Ashman picked up his first win of the season on Wednesday night after dealing the final 3.2 innings vs. Northern Colorado. Ashman, who is a member of the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List, closed out the series finale vs. Oregon State for his Pac-12-leading fifth save of the season. The season total also ranks fifth in the country, while Ashman's 14 career saves tie him with Dylan Drachler (2014-17) for second-most in recorded program history. Tyler Wagner holds the program record with 17 from 2010-12.
- The Utes also are looking to keep the momentum going in Pac-12 Conference play after a come-from-behind win last Sunday over then-No. 3 Oregon State. Utah trailed the Beavers 9-0 after three innings of play, but then the bats heated up as the home club scored 14 runs between the fourth and seventh innings on the way to a 14-11 win.
- The nine-run comeback victory was Utah's largest as a member of the Pac-12 Conference and surpassed a seven-run rally in a win over Arizona State in 2017.
- Though Gary Henderson's club fell to the Beavers in the first two games, Utah battled into the late innings both on Friday and Saturday. The Utes carried a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning of game one before OSU rallied for a 7-5 win; on Saturday the teams were scoreless through seven innings in what became an 8-1 decision for the visitors.
- Roberts continues to show incredible strides from his junior season, heading into the weekend in Berkeley with a team-best .366 batting average—exactly 100 points above where Roberts finished the 2023 campaign. It's the highest average Roberts has posted as a Ute and includes a Pac-12-leading 10 doubles, which rank 15th nationally.
- Roberts recorded his 12th stolen base of the season on Wednesday, bringing his career total to 45—seven from tying the program record (52).
- Roberts and Core Jackson each hit over .450 during last weekend's Oregon State series; three of Roberts' five hits went for extra bases (2 2B, 1 3B).
- The Utes have been more aggressive on the basepaths this season and the numbers show: Utah's 43 stolen bases lead the league and are on pace to surpass last year's total (62 stolen bases).
- Second baseman Bruer Webster went 47 at bats prior to his first strikeout of the season, ranking as the Pac-12's toughest player to strikeout. Cameron Gurney had a similar run to begin the 2023 campaign, going 49 at bats before his first strikeout.
- Utah's pitching staff continues to rank among the Pac-12's best as the league schedule continues. At 4.42, the team's ERA ranks third in the Pac-12, while 3.47 walks allowed per nine innings checks in at second-best in the conference and the top-25 across college baseball. Saturday probable Bryson Van Sickle is in the league's top-five with a 2.52 ERA, while Randon Hostert has contributed solid work in 13 relief appearances with a 2.70 ERA—sixth in the Pac-12.
- The Utes will return home to Smith's Ballpark on Tuesday, March 26 to host Utah Tech in a 6 p.m. game.
