BERKELEY, Calif. – Drake Digiorno scored the go-ahead run in what became a four-spot in the eighth inning for the Utah Baseball team, as the Utes broke a 3-3 tie and ultimately won the series opener over California, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium. The result gives Utah (15-6, 4-3 Pac-12) its fourth straight win, and sixth victory in its last eight games.
Digiorno came in courtesy of an RBI groundout by
Tyler Quinn. Then, after a pinch-hit single from
Karson Bodily,
TJ Clarkson advanced to third and would score when
Kaden Carpenter grounded out. Two batters later,
Bruer Webster smacked his first triple of the season to score a pair and give Utah some insurance heading into the ninth.
Merit Jones (1-1) earned the win with a seven-inning start, in which Jones allowed three runs on seven hits, a pair of walks and struck out four in his outing. Fellow Idaho Falls, Idaho, native
Randon Hostert entered the game in the eighth and finished off the contest with two innings pitched out of the bullpen.
Leadoff hitter
Core Jackson had a 3-for-4 day with an RBI and a walk—hitting safely for the ninth straight game and earning his team-best 11
th multi-hit game of the season. Clarkson had his third home run of the year as part of a two-hit performance with a pair of runs scored. Webster's triple capped off his third multi-hit game of the season as well.
Kai Roberts singled and had a sacrifice fly, extending his reached-base streak to 20 games.
Cal broke the ice with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Golden Bears followed a leadoff walk with an RBI double, then pulled ahead 2-0 later in the inning with an RBI groundout. In the third inning, the home club swelled its lead to 3-0 on a Caleb Lomavita solo homer.
But Utah began to chip away in the fourth, getting on the board with Clarkson's one-out solo shot—his third of the year and 31
st as a Ute.
Then in the top of the fifth, Utah leveled the score at three-all. Antillon battled back from a 1-2 count to earn a one-out walk, then Webster laid down a perfectly-placed bunt single toward the right side. Jackson then brought in Antillon with an RBI single, before Roberts' sacrifice fly was able to bring in Webster with the tying run. It came after a review earlier in the at bat to look at whether Roberts had been hit by a pitch.
The Utes had a chance to pull ahead in the seventh but stranded a runner at third base. Though he ultimately was retired, Carpenter led off the frame with an absolute battle of an at bat; he and Christian Becerra went at it for 14 pitches, including fouling off eight pitches with two strikes. Later in the inning, Antillon would make it to third base but a pop up in the infield ended the inning.
After Jones worked through the seventh inning on the mound for Utah, Digiorno and Clarkson led off the top of the eighth with singles. The latter gave the team runners at the corners with nobody out. Quinn and Carpenter each grounded out to bring in a run and give the Utes a 5-3 lead.
Antillon then came up to bat with two outs and walked, setting the stage for Webster to send the 1-0 pitch down the right field line and into the corner for his first triple of the season. It scored Antillon and Bodily, bringing the ballgame to its final score of 7-3.
The Utes faced a two-on, one-out situation in the home half of the eighth inning, but Hostert responded with a strikeout and then got out of the threat with a ground ball. An infield single was all Utah allowed in the ninth as the club wrapped up the series-opening win.
Next Up
The Utes will try to extend their winning streak to five straight games on Saturday, when the club faces California for the middle contest of the three-game set. First pitch slated for 3:05 p.m. MT inside Stu Gordon Stadium.
