BERKELEY, Calif. – The Utah Baseball team once again was tied with California after seven innings, but on Saturday it was the Golden Bears that pulled ahead in the eighth as the Utes fell, 3-1, at Stu Gordon Stadium.
The result snaps a four-game winning streak for Utah (15-7, 4-4 Pac-12), which will now look to take the series in Sunday's rubber game.
Kaden Carpenter led the Utes at the plate with a season-high three hits including Carpenter's fourth double of the season.
Hunter Antillon and
Drake Digiorno also contributed multi-hit performances and Antillon drove in the Utes' lone run on the day.
Two-hole hitter
Kai Roberts singled and walked three times, reaching base safely for the 21
st straight game. Roberts also stole two bases and now has 47 in his career as a Ute—five from tying the program record.
Lefty
Bryson Van Sickle threw 77 pitches in his seven-inning start, allowing just one run on five hits, no walks and striking out three. He received a no-decision after exiting the game with the score tied at one.
Randon Hostert and
Jackson Elder pitched out of the bullpen with Hostert (3-2) taking the loss.
Cal took a 1-0 lead after just two batters in the first inning. Leadoff hitter PJ Moutzouridis tripled on a ball that rolled to deep center field, scoring on a groundout by Rodney Green Jr. Including Green Jr., Van Sickle answered the leadoff triple by retiring 15 of the next 16 batters he faced.
Utah looked in position to tie the score in the fifth inning. Roberts laced a two-out single and took third on a base hit from Digiorno, but he was stranded 90 feet from home.
In the sixth the Utes came even with Cal thanks to some small ball.
Karson Bodily reached base after grounding into a fielder's choice, then moved up to third on a Carpenter single. Antillon then stepped into the box and sprinted down the line on a first-pitch bunt single that brought in Bodily with the tying run.
Looking to pull in front, the Utes had runners at the corners both in the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to capitalize.
TJ Clarkson contributed an outfield assist in the home half of the seventh to keep the score tied at one. With two outs and runners on first and second, Seth Gwynn put a single into right field. Clarkson fielded the base hit and fired home with Peyton Schulze headed to the plate. The throw was right on-line to Antillon covering the plate, as the Utah catcher hung on to the ball in a collision with Schulze to end the inning.
Moutzouridis came back up with a runner on in the bottom of the eighth and sent a payoff pitch over the wall in left-center, giving the Golden Bears a 3-1 lead.
