BERKELEY, Calif. – The Utah Baseball team held off a late California rally and the Utes came away with a 6-5 victory in the rubber match of the teams' three-game series on Sunday at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Utah (16-7, 5-4 Pac-12) has won five of its last six games and now has clinched both of its road series to date in Pac-12 Conference play.
Kai Roberts,
Drake Digiorno and
TJ Clarkson powered the Utes at the dish in the Nos. 2-4 spots in the lineup; the trio combined for five hits, four runs scored and three RBI. Roberts and Digiorno each homered in the game, with Roberts now owning five long balls on the season and three for Digiorno. Digiorno (9) and Roberts (6) each extended their hitting streaks as Roberts also reached base safely for the 22
nd straight game.
Hunter Antillon scored a run for the Utes in the eighth inning in what proved to be the deciding tally, while
Kaden Carpenter crossed the plate earlier in the ballgame.
On the mound for Utah,
Bransen Kuehl (2-0) was the winner with a 2.1-inning appearance; Kuehl relieved starter
Brett Porthan and struck out a pair with just two hits allowed.
Jaden Harris came on for an inning of work, then handed the ball to
Micah Ashman for the final two innings.
Ashman would close out the game for his Pac-12-leading sixth save of the season and his 15
th as a Ute; it gives Ashman sole possession of second in recorded program history and is just two away from tying the all-time record.
Utah took a 1-0, first-inning lead thanks to a throwing error by the Golden Bears. With two outs, Clarkson grounded one toward shortstop; Cal's PJ Moutzouridis showed outstanding range to keep the ball in the infield but the throw across the diamond to first base got away, allowing Digiorno to score all the way from first base.
The Golden Bears would level the score at one in the home half of the first, when Rodney Green Jr. clubbed a solo homer to right-center field.
Digiorno then put the Utes back in front in the top of the third; clubbing a solo shot with two outs. It put Utah ahead, 2-1, though the Golden Bears tied things back up at two in the bottom of the inning with a two-out single.
Four unanswered runs then went to the Utes as the club took a 6-2 lead. It began in the fourth when
Michael Davinni popped a single through the right side, bringing in Carpenter from second base. Then in the fifth, Roberts clubbed a two-out solo homer on the first pitch, going opposite field and past the outstretched glove of Cal left fielder Seth Gwynn.
Utah would stretch its lead to 5-2 later in the fifth on a Cal error, then added another run in the eighth after three hit batsmen and a walk to Roberts—all with two outs.
Cal made things interesting in its half of the eighth, plating three runs. Pinch hitter Matthew Thomas hit a two-run homer, then Moutzouridis brought in a run with a sac fly to narrow Utah's lead to 6-5. But Ashman pushed back with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
He then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with a fly ball to Roberts in center field, a pop up to second baseman
Bruer Webster then another pop up that Digiorno tracked down in foul territory past the Bears' dugout, securing the road series victory.
