SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team erased an initial 4-0 deficit and forced extra innings, but Stanford pushed seven runs across in the top of the 11
th as the Utes fell in the series finale, 13-6, on Saturday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.
Utah, which previously secured the series with wins over the Cardinal on Thursday and Friday, is now 18-8 on the season and 7-5 in Pac-12 Conference play.
Leadoff man
Core Jackson had a season-high four hits, walked and scored three runs, capping off a series in which Jackson was 8-for-12 at the plate. Two-hole hitter
Kai Roberts was 3-for-6 with a double, scored once and drove in a pair.
TJ Clarkson and
Dakota Duffalo each had two hits; Clarkson had three RBI and Duffalo hit his first home run of the season.
Clarkson's day extended his reached-base streak to 12 consecutive games.
Trailing 6-3 after six innings, Utah leveled the score at six after an RBI double from Roberts in the seventh, followed up in the eighth by Duffalo's solo shot and an RBI single from Roberts.
After tying things up in the eighth, the Utes had a chance to pull in front but stranded a runner at third, before mustering just a hit by pitch and walk the rest of the afternoon.
Stanford jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings, before the Utes netted a pair in the home half. Jackson hit a two-out single, reaching third on Roberts' base hit. With a walk to
Michael Davinni the Utes now had the bases loaded to set the stage for a two-run knock Clarkson, bringing the score to 4-2.
A solo homer for the Cardinal put the visitors in front in the fourth by a 5-2 score. The Utes then used a double play to get out of the fifth. Clarkson laced a single to left center in the bottom half, allowing Jackson to run in once more and bring down the deficit to 5-3.
Bransen Kuehl relieved starter Brett Pothan in the sixth and pitched 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen, before
Randon Hostert came on with one out in the eighth. Hostert induced a fielder's choice and a fly ball to get Utah back to the bats looking to level the score in the eighth.
Utah's two-spot in the eighth to tie the score came thanks to a two-out rally. Duffalo clubbed a 2-2 pitch onto the berm in left field, sparking a string of four straight hits for the Utes. Pinch hitter
Matt Flaharty had a first-pitch single, took third on Jackson's base hit, then scored on a Roberts single to right center.
A scoreless ninth for both clubs sent Utah to its fourth extra-inning game of the season and the first for the Cardinal.
Cameron Nielson made an appearance on the mound in the 11
th inning and recorded two outs for the Utes.
The ballgame was wrapped up after Utah looked to rally in the bottom of the 11
th but the Utes were retired 1-2-3.
Hostert took the loss (3-3).
