The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah Baseball team takes a break from Pac-12 Conference play this week, beginning a six-game stretch of non-league play with a home-and-home against Utah Valley. The Utes will host UVU in a 6 p.m. game on Monday at Smith's Ballpark, before trekking down to UCCU Ballpark in Orem for another 6 p.m. battle on Tuesday.
- Utah has won seven of its nine last games, including taking two in a Pac-12 series against Stanford this past weekend. It brings the Utes to three series wins over their first four league weekends; Gary Henderson's club also won road rubber games at both Washington State and California.
- Both Utah and Arizona have a league-best seven wins in Pac-12 play through last weekend's games. By league winning percentage (.583), the Utes currently are tied with Arizona for third in the standings. First-place Oregon had its bye this past weekend and Oregon State had its series finale vs. USC rained out.
- Utah took the first two games from Stanford (3-2 and 7-5) before erasing a 4-0 deficit in the series finale to force extra innings. But the Utes came up short in their bid for the series sweep, falling by a 13-6 score in 11 innings.
- The Utes currently have two players hitting over .350 in center fielder Kai Roberts (.365) and shortstop Jackson (.364). Roberts, a native of Lehi, Utah, also leads the Pac-12 with 14 stolen bases—his 47 career swipes are five away from tying the program career record.
- Jackson had team-bests against the Cardinal with a combined eight hits and six runs scored on the weekend. In the middle game, a 7-5 win for Utah, Jackson led off three different innings—reaching all three times and scoring three runs.
- Southpaw closer Micah Ashman (Sandy, Utah) earned saves in the first two games against Stanford. It brings Ashman to 17 in his three seasons as a Ute, tying him with Tyler Wagner (17) for the program record. His next save will not only break the program's career record but will match his season total (9) from the 2023 campaign.
- All three of the aforementioned Utes were included on D1Baseball.com's Week 6 position-by-position nationwide rankings. Roberts was tabbed the No. 14 outfielder, Ashman the No. 22 relief pitcher and Jackson was slotted No. 35 in the list of the nation's top shortstops.
- Merit Jones went seven-plus innings in his start during the series opener vs. Stanford. It was Jones' longest start as a Ute and his third in a row of at least six innings. He struck out six Cardinal and walked just one batter.
- The Utes have been more aggressive on the basepaths this season and the numbers show: Utah's 49 stolen bases lead the league and are on pace to surpass last year's total (62 stolen bases).
- Following the home-and-home with UVU, the Utes will get ready for their Pac-12 bye weekend as CSUN visits Smith's Ballpark for a three-game series.
