Last Time Out
The Utes are in the midst of their longest winning streak of the season, having reeled off seven-in-a-row. They've downed four opponents during their run and their triumphs have included a come-from-behind effort against Nebraska, an extra-inning victory over Wisconsin, a perfect game thrown by
Sarah Ladd at the expense of Utah Tech and a road conquest of San Diego State on Wednesday. Utah's excellence during their streak has been evidence by a .368 batting average, a scoring rate of more than seven runs per game and a 1.86 ERA.
The three Utes who've been swinging the hottest bats over the team's last seven games have been
Aliya Belarde,
Abby Dayton and
Haley Denning, with the latter player recording .643 average during that period. The graduate student from Arizona has collected multiple hits in eight of her last nine games, including a 5-for-5 performance on March 2 and a 4-for-4 day on Monday. No one in the Pac-12 has more hits, runs scored or a higher batting average then Denning.
Just two spots behind Denning on the Pac-12's batting average leaderboard in Dayton, who's hitting .470 and has knocked in 10 runs over her last seven contests. Dayton has reached base safely in each of her last 11 games, improving her average by nearly 200 points over that span and has also blasted the first two homers of her Utah career. Belarde is riding a seven-game hit streak and had scored 11 runs during that time.
In the circle,
Sarah Ladd has pitched to 1.05 ERA in 20 innings during Utah's unbeaten streak and opponents are hitting just .205 against her. On Sunday, she threw just the fourth seven-inning perfect game in program history and, against San Diego State, Ladd stranded eight total runners on base during a relief outing that garnered her win No. 7 in 2024. Only one player in the Pac-12 has more victories this season than
Sarah Ladd.
Scouting the Opposition
At one point in the early part of 2024, the Bruins' record stood at 3-4, but since then, coach Kelly Inouye-Perez's bunch has captured eight of 10 decisions and they've outscored the opposition 38-5 in their last six outings. UCLA will also be looking for its 10th straight Pac-12 series victory.
After nearly taking home National Player of the Year honors in 2023, Maya Brady has picked up right where she left off, sporting a .364 average with a team-high 19 RBIs and 15 runs scored. Two of those dingers came in a Feb. 16 win over No. 7 Florida State and Brady also has six games to her credit in which she's knocked in multiple runs, including each of her team's last two matchups.
In the circle, no one has thrown more innings than Taylor Tinsley and she's crafted a 2.51 ERA over 55 2/3 innings. The 2023 All-Pac-12 Freshman Team pick has allowed only four earned runs over her last five appearances, including a complete-game shutout of Northwestern on Feb. 23. The lowest ERA on the UCLA staff belongs to freshman Kaitlyn Terry, who fired a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts against Weber State on March 2.
