CORVALLIS – Despite a career-high 40 points from
Branden Carlson and a late push in the second half, the Utah men's basketball team saw its four-game win-streak against Oregon State snapped Thursday night inside Gill Coliseum 92-85.
Â
Carlson becomes the first Ute to score 40 points in a game since Keith Van Horn did it on Feb. 15, 1997, to help No. 5 Utah defeat TCU 94-91 at home.
Â
Utah (18-12, 9-10 Pac-12) got off to a good start to the game with a 10-5 lead out of the first media break (15-32) before the Beavers went ahead with a 9-2 run for the 14-13 edge heading into the under-12 media break. Unfortunately for Utah, that run for Oregon State continued and saw its lead extend to 22-13 before Carlson ended the scoring drought for Utah with a bucket inside the paint.
Â
A 3-point play by
Deivon Smith made it 26-18, but the Beavers answered right back with a quick 5-2 spurt to push their lead back up to double-digits (31-20) with 6:53 left in the half before Justin Rochelin tacked on two more out of the break at the line.
Â
The Beavers (13-17, 5-14 Pac-12) pushed their lead as high as 42-26 with 1:48 left to go but seven-straight points from Carlson brought the Utes within 46-33 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Â
In the second frame, a 13-2 run by Utah was fueled by Carlson who went on an 8-0 run of his own to bring Utah within 56-50 of the Beavers – which forced a timeout with 13:33 to play. However, two empty possession out of the break saw OSU capitalize and pushed its lead back up to double-digits as Utah continued to fight and trailed 68-57 with 7:03 left to play.
Â
The scoring drought for Utah continued as Oregon State rattled off another 8-4 run heading into the final media timeout (3:42) with the Utes trailing 76-61. Utah continued to fight and would cut the Oregon State lead down to 10 points each time but couldn't get it down to single-digits until Carlson made it 81-74 with 1:39 left for his 37th point of the night.
Â
Utah cut the OSU lead down to single-digits two more times, but Oregon State could not miss from the free-line, knocking down 11-of-14 in the final 1:28 of play and 31-for-37 on the night to fend off the furious rally by the Utes down to the very end.
Â
Carlson also finished with 7 rebounds behind 5-for-10 shooting from the 3-point line and shot 16-for-26 in the game.
Deivon Smith chipped in with yet another double-double posting 19 points with 10 assists and 2 steals.
Gabe Madsen wrapped up with 13 points and a career-high 7 assists.
