EUGENE, Ore. – The Utah men's basketball team looks to close out the 2023-24 regular-season the right way on Saturday, March 9, when it battles the Oregon Ducks on their senior night inside Matthew Knight Arena. Ben Creighton will have the call on Pac-12 Networks alongside Ernie Kent as the Utes look to pick up their first win in Eugene since 2017.
BALLER BRANDEN
Utah center
Branden Carlson continues to cement himself into Runnin' Ute lore after becoming the first player since Keith Van Horn to score 40-plus points in a game in 1997 after dropping 40 points himself against Oregon State on the road. It is only the third in a Runnin' Ute has had 40-plus in a game since the 1996-97 season with Van Horn owning two of them. The South Jordan native was 16-for-26 from the field – including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc – while also grabbing 7 rebounds with 2 assists and a block.
Carlson is just the 19th player from the Pac-12 since 1996-97 to reach the 40-point plateau while his 40 points was just the 25th instance for the Conference the Championships since 96-97. Additionally, 15 of those 25 instances have occurred in a conference game. It is also just the sixth time this season a player has scored 40-plus points in a game – all of which have occurred in conference play.
DIMES A PLENTY
According to Stats Perform,
Deivon Smith is just 1-of-2 players in the country that has dished out 100-plus assists in 21 games or less played this season. Smith currently sits at 143 dimes after dishing out 10 assists Thursday night at Oregon State. The only other player with 100-plus assists having played 21 games or less this season is Kerr Kriisa (WVU) – who has dished out 102 assists in 21 games. Interestingly enough,
Rollie Worster is fourth on that list with 88 assists while Stanford's Jared Bynum is third with 94 assists through 18 games. Three of the top four hail from the Conference of Champions with Kriisa having ties to the league after player his previous three seasons at Arizona.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a 40-point performance from
Branden Carlson and a double-double from
Deivon Smith, the Utah men's basketball team couldn't pull off the comeback in its 92-85 loss to Oregon State on the road. The Runnin' Utes battled back in the second half to outscore the Beavers 52-26, but a 31-for-37 effort from OSU from the foul line to Utah's 8-for-11 was too much to overcome at the end of the night. Carlson finished the night with 40 points and 7 rebounds on 16-of-26 shooting while scoring 25 of his 40 points in the second-half. Smith recorded a double-double for the second-straight game, three if you included his triple-double the game before, with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals.
Gabe Madsen chipped in with 13 points and a career-high 7 assists.
UP NEXT
Utah's seeding in the Pac-12 Tournament next week will be determined on Saturday based on the result of its game at Oregon as well as the other games around the league. The Utes can finish as high as fifth with a win on Saturday and can finish as low as seventh should it drop the season-finale in Eugene.
