TEMPE, Ariz. –
Haley Denning and
Kaylah Nelsen each collected three hits,
Julia Jimenez drove in four runs and the University of Utah softball team survived a comeback attempt by the Arizona State Sun Devils to emerge victorious, 10-9, on Saturday evening in Pac-12 Conference action at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
Utah's ledger now reads 24-17 overall and 6-11 in league competition. ASU drops to 18-20 and 2-12.
Utah's offense wasted no time in denting home plate, scoring in the first inning on a Nelsen RBI double and Jimenez followed with a two-bagger of her own four batters later that brought in a pair for a quick 3-0 lead.
A long delay suspended play during that first inning, but when the teams returned to the field, the Utes remained in control, adding to their advantage in the third when Jimenez pulverized a 2-2 pitch into left-center for a two-run homer that made the score 5-0.
Another run came across in the fourth when
Sophie Jacquez bounced into a bases-loaded fielder's choice and the Utes seemed to blow the game open in the fifth thanks to a three-run double off the bat of Nelsen and a
Reese Lee RBI single that put the visitors ahead by 10.
In the bottom of the fifth, ASU suddenly awakened on offense and used a pair of home runs to fuel a six-run inning that reduced their deficit to four. The Sun Devils scored three more times in the sixth and seemed primed to tie the game with runners at first and third and only one out, but when Belarde gloved a popup and doubled the runner off first, the Utes escaped the jam with their slim lead intact.
Taylor Jacobs was called on to pick up the final three outs and recorded the first two with little trouble, but the Sun Devils then used a single and two walks to load the bases. Jacobs then bore down and fired three straight strikes to put up the punchout that locked down a series victory for Utah.
