SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a pair of three-hit performances from
Aliya Belarde and
Kaylah Nelsen, the University of Utah softball team suffered a 7-4 defeat to the No. 22 Arizona Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The Utes stand at 21-17 on the season and 4-11 in conference competition, while the Wildcats are 24-12-1 and 7-8.
Utah was the first team out of the blocks, loading the bases in the opening inning and scoring first on a
Sophie Jacquez bases-loaded walk. They added a second run on a Nelsen RBI double in the second.
In the third, the home team doubled its lead with a rally that started with a
Haley Denning infield hit. Denning would score three batters later when
Chloe Doyle laced a hit into left and Doyle touched home to make score 4-0 thanks to a Belarde double into left-center.
Unfortunately for Utah, the Wildcats overcame that lead with a six-run fifth, capped by an Allie Skaggs grand slam and the Wildcats scored again in the sixth to up their lead to 7-4. The home side did its best to mount a comeback of their own, putting multiple runners on base in the fifth and seventh, but the Utes couldn't find the big hit they needed to eliminate their opponents' advantage.
