STANFORD, Calif. –
Mariah Lopez allowed only four total hits across six innings and
Karlie Davison smacked a game-tying, pinch-hit home run in the top of the fifth inning, but the University of Utah softball team suffered a 2-1 defeat to the No. 6 UCLA Bruins in the Pac-12 Tournament Championship Game at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium on Saturday evening in Stanford, Calif.
This defeat drops Utah's 2024 record to 34-20.
Both offenses were stifled through the first four innings, UCLA tallying the only run on a Jordan Woolery solo homer. The Bruins tried to add to their lead, but Lopez stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fourth, keeping her team within a run.
It was in the fifth that the Utes evened the score. Davison came to the plate with two outs and blasted a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left-center, her second long ball in as many Pac-12 Championship games.
Unfortunately for Utah, that tie was broken by UCLA on a Sharlize Palacios home run in the bottom of the sixth. That proved to be the winning run, as the Utes were held scoreless in the seventh.
Lopez,
Kaylah Nelsen and
Sarah Ladd were named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team.
