DURHAM, N.C. –
Mariah Lopez permitted only four hits across six innings, but the University of Utah softball team ended up on the short end of a 2-1 decision against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Durham Regional at Duke Softball Stadium.
Utah's 2024 record now stands at 34-21.
"We didn't play our best today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "We were prepared and yet, had some second-guessing and some uncomfortable at-bats and they carried too far into the game where you're running out of outs."
The day started with two scoreless innings, Lopez collecting a trio of strikeouts across those frames. In the third, Utah got on the board first, thanks to doubles by
Aliya Belarde and
Abby Dayton, but the Gamecocks immediately came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Lopez made sure those were the only runs South Carolina would score, as she spent the next three innings putting up nothing but zeroes. In six innings, the Utah lefty would allow only four hits and strikeout eight while firing her 19th complete game of the season.
Unfortunately for the Utes, they were unable to scratch out the tying run. They put a baserunner on in each of the final three stanzas, only for all three runners to be stranded.
