DURHAM, N.C. -
Sarah Ladd fired six innings of shutout ball before
Mariah Lopez recorded the final three outs as the University of Utah softball team staved off elimination with a 1-0 blanking of the Morgan State Bears at the NCAA Durham Regional on Saturday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Â
This triumph improves Utah to 35-21.
Â
Ladd spent all six innings mystifying Morgan State's lineup, allowing only three singles and a double, while issuing only a single walk. She stranded runners in scoring position multiple times, but never allowed a baserunner to reach third. Ladd also recorded four strikeouts while earning her 10th win.
Â
The Utes got the only run they needed in the third with a rally that began with a hit from
Shelbi Ortiz that put her on second. Three batters later,
Haley Denning reached on a bunt single, allowing Ortiz to scamper home from third with the game's only run.
Â
Lopez took over on the mound in the seventh and the lead-off hitter drew a walk. The next batter drove a liner into the right field corner for an apparent double, but when the Utes challenged the play, it was revealed the runner on first had left early, cancelling the extra base hit and putting an out on the board. Lopez then retired the next two players and the Utes had survived and advanced.
