IRVING, Texas—University of Utah gymnasts
Grace McCallum and
Avery Neff were
honored Tuesday by the Big 12 Conference for their performances on Saturday at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad in Oklahoma City. McCallum, a senior, was named Gymnast of the Week, while Neff, a freshman, earned Newcomer of the Week.
The honors are Utah's first in Big 12 Gymnastics competition.
McCallum had a strong overall showing, competing against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 LSU and No. 6 Cal. She recorded Utah's highest score of the competition with a 9.975 in the anchor spot on bars to share the event win with Oklahoma's Audrey Davis.
McCallum's 9.975 on bars ties with Davis for the best score on the apparatus among all gymnasts in the country through two weeks of the season. She anchored all three events in which she competed, adding a 9.825 on floor and a 9.80 on beam to wrap up the competition.
It is McCallum's second career weekly conference award. She was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Jan. 18, 2022.
Neff put on a performance befitting the nation's No. 1 recruit from 2024, posting three scores of 9.90 or better against some of the nation's best competition. She tied for fifth in the all-around with a score of 39.600, trailing only the Oklahoma duo of Jordan Bowers and 2024 NCAA beam champion and three-time All-American Faith Torrez, and the LSU duo of 2024 Olympian Aleah Finnigan and Kailin Chio.
The top score of the day for Neff, a 9.925 on vault, tied for second on the event with LSU's Chase Brock, just behind LSU's Chio (9.950), and ahead of LSU's Finnigan and Oklahoma's Bowers. It also was the highest score on the apparatus of all Big 12 gymnasts in Week 2.
Neff led Utah on floor and beam with a pair of 9.90s, with the beam score tying her for third in that event behind only Oklahoma's Torrez (9.975) and LSU's Finnigan (9.925) and tied for best among all Big 12 gymnasts in Week 2. She rounded out her day with a 9.875 on bars.
