Postgame Notes (at) Utah 42, No. 21 Arizona State 10 Salt Lake City, Utah (Rice-Eccles Stadium) Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025 Kick: 8:26 p.m. MT | End: 11:39 p.m. Attendance: 51,444 (sellout)
 General
Saturday's 32-point win marked the Utes' largest margin of victory over a ranked team since their 62-20 win over then-No. 13 Oregon in 2015.
Utah has won five of its last six games against Arizona State and now holds an 8-7 series lead when playing in Salt Lake City.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham, the winningest leader in program history, improved to 172-87 at the helm of the Utes. Including his time as an assistant coach (1994-2004), Whittingham has coached in 385 games at Utah and contributed to 257—both the most of any coach in school history.
Utah is now 122-42 when playing inside Rice-Eccles Stadium since it opened in 1998.
Tonight's game marked the 92nd consecutive sellout of Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The win was Utah's first over a ranked opponent since 2021 when playing as an unranked team.
Arizona State won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Utah defended the South goal to begin the game.
 Offense
Utah has now totaled 19 rushing touchdowns this season, tying the 2004 squad for the most in the first six games of a season since at least 1995.
Tonight marked the fifth time in recorded program history that the Utes rushed for six touchdowns as a team. The last was in the game at Stanford during the 2021 season.
As a team, the Utes put up 276 rushing yards; it was more than ASU had in total offense (259) and marked the third time this season that the team rushed for 250+ yards. In 2024, Utah's season-high rushing yardage was 249.
Quarterback Devon Dampier rushed 10 times for 120 yards and three touchdowns, with his three rushing scores tying a career-high and the most by a Utah player since Ja'Quinden Jackson accomplished the feat at Colorado in 2022. Dampier also passed 7-of-12 for 104 yards with no sacks and no interceptions.
It was Dampier's first game at Utah with multiple rushing touchdowns. His 24-yard score was a season-long rush.
Prior to tonight, Travis Wilson was the last Utah quarterback to both rush and pass for 100 yards in the same game, doing both in the game at Oregon in 2015.
Dampier averaged 12 yards per carry, ranking sixth for a single-game in Utah's recorded history (minimum 8 carries). Among quarterbacks, he trails only Darnell Arceneaux who averaged 14.38 yards per carry in a game against UTEP during the 1998 season.
Dampier's three rushing scores make him the second Utah quarterback since at least 1995 to rush for multiple touchdowns against a ranked opponent. Cameron Rising did it in back-to-back games in 2022 against UCLA and USC.
This season is the first since 2022 that Utah has had multiple quarterbacks with at least one multi-rushing TD game (Dampier – 2 vs. ASU; Byrd Ficklin – 2 vs. Cal Poly).
Ficklin appeared in the second half tonight, completing his lone pass attempt for 32 yards to Otto Tia. Ficklin also kept the ball once for a four-yard rushing touchdown.
Prior to tonight, Ficklin was the last Utah quarterback to rush for multiple touchdowns in a game, doing so earlier this season vs. Cal Poly. The last time Utah had multiple quarterbacks rush for a touchdown in the same game was in 2023 vs. Florida (Bryson Barnes and Nate Johnson).
Running back NaQuari Rogers contributed a team-leading 12 carries, racking up 48 yards (2 TD).
Dampier connected with wide receiver Ryan Davis for a 56-yard pass during the third quarter. It was the longest completion of the season by the Utes and a career-long reception for Davis.
Running back Daniel Bray set a new career-best with 41 rushing yards.
Utah scored on its opening drive of both halves for the fifth time this season.
 Defense
The defense held Arizona State to 10 points, the fewest allowed against a ranked opponent since 2023 when then-No. 22 UCLA was held to just a touchdown in a 14-7 victory for Utah.
Defensive end Logan Fano led the defensive line with six tackles (1.0 sack). His sack was one of a season-high five for Utah in the game.
Fellow defensive end John Henry Daley made five stops, tying a career-best with 2.5 TFL. Daley also had 1.5 sacks, bringing his season total to 8.0.
Daley has now made at least 1.0 TFL in all six games this season, becoming the first Utah player to accomplish that feat since Chase Hansen in 2018. The last defensive lineman to do it was Star Lotulelei in 2012.
Safety Nate Tilmon made his first collegiate sack as part of a three-tackle evening.
Linebacker Levani Damuni made his first sack of the season; it was Damuni's first solo sack at Utah after he had 0.5 sack in 2023 and missed the 2024 season due to injury.
Cornerback Donovan Saunders saw his first game action as a Utah Ute.
Arizona State was held to a field goal on its game-opening drive; it is the fifth time this season that the Utah defense did not surrender a touchdown.
 Special Teams
During the second quarter, Jackson Bennee blocked an Arizona State field goal attempt that was ultimately recovered by Blake Cotton (his first career recovery). It was Utah's first field goal block since the TCU game in 2024, while Bennee also blocked a punt vs. Iowa State in 2024.
Kicker Dillon Curtis was perfect on his six PAT attempts and kicked off seven times (5 TB).
Punter Orion Phillips sent his lone punt of the night for 38 yards and landed it inside the ASU 20-yard line.
 First Quarter Breakdown
Utah got the ball to start the game and turned it into points after a 14-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. The Utes rushed 11 times for 49 yards on the drive, including a 12-yard scamper from Dampier to put the home team on the scoreboard first.Â
Â
Arizona State took possession down 7-0 with 9:46 left in the opening quarter and put together a 16-play, 54-yard drive that took 7:22 off the clock and ended with a 38-yard field goal. Utah got the ball back with 2:34 remaining up 7-3, but were forced to punt after just five plays. The Sun Devils got the ball with 38 seconds left in the quarter, but tackles for loss by John Henry Daley and Smith Snowden set up a 3rd-and-17 at the nine-yard line to start the second quarter.
Â
Utah held Arizona State to just 42 yards of total offense in the opening 15 minutes, including just 17 yards through the air on 4-of-9 passing, while gaining 86 yards itself. The Utes rushed for 62 yards compared to ASU's 25.
 Second Quarter Breakdown
Utah forced the punt and took over on its own 41-yard line and put together an eight-play, 59-yard scoring drive. On 4th-and-1 from the ASU 38-yard line, Dampier was able to pick up the first down with a five-yard keeper, and two plays later he broke free for a 24-yard touchdown run to put the Utes up 14-3 with 11:27 left.Â
Â
Arizona State was able to get into the red zone on its ensuing drive, but Utah's special teams unit kept the Sun Devils off the board. Jackson Bennee blocked the 29-yard field goal attempt and Blake Cotton recovered the loose ball, giving Utah possession at its own 25-yard line with 3:05 left to play.Â
Â
Dampier orchestrated a six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to push the Utah lead to 21-3. The Utah quarterback logged rushes of 10, 13 and 19 yards before NaQuari Rogers broke loose for a 22-yard score with 1:04 left in the half. The Utes were able to keep the Sun Devils contained in their own half of the field for the final 64 seconds and went into the locker room with a three-score lead.Â
 Third Quarter Breakdown
Utah opened the second half by forcing its second three-and-out of the game. Taking possession at their own 32-yard line, the Utes needed just five plays to go 68 yards for the touchdown. The majority of those yards came on a 56-yard completion from Dampier to Ryan Davis, the longest pass of the season by the Utes, and it set up a two-yard touchdown rush from Rogers on an option play.
Â
Arizona State was able to answer with a touchdown of its own after a 13-play, 75-yard drive. Utah regained possession at its own 35-yard line with 4:27 remaining leading 28-10. Dampier led the Utes on an eight-play scoring drive, highlighted by a 22-yard scramble before the Utah signal caller scampered in for his third touchdown of the night from nine yards out. With 45 seconds left in the quarter, Utah led 35-10.
Â
A pass breakup by Smith Snowden set up an ASU 4th-and-4 as time ran out in the third period.
 Fourth Quarter Breakdown
Arizona State picked up the fourth down conversion and was able to get the ball into Utah territory, but the Utes' defense kicked it into high gear. Three straight sacks, 1.5 of which came from John Henry Daley, led to a 4th-and-36, and Mana Carvalho returned the punt 24 yards to set Utah up at the ASU 42-yard line.Â
Byrd Ficklin took over the Utah offense, handing the ball off to Wayshawn Parker three times for 26 yards before rushing for a four-yard touchdown himself to give the Utes a 42-10 lead with 10:05 left to play.Â
Â
With most of Utah's defensive starters on the sideline, Arizona State was able to drive into the red zone, but Utah's defense stood firm on the goal line and forced a turnover on downs at the 3-yard line.Â
Â
Ficklin completed his lone pass of the night, a 32-yard strike to Otto Tia down the sideline, to get the Utes out of the shadow of their goal line and allowed Utah to line up in victory formation.
