THIS WEEK
The No. 1 ranked Utah Golf team returns to action, teeing off in their third tournament of the fall, the Williams Cup, at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
The Utes and head coach Garrett Clegg have been on a roll at the genesis of the 2025-2026 season. As a team, Utah has secured back-to-back top-three finishes, taking third at the Wohali and second at the Tindall, earning a No. 1 overall NCAA ranking in the most recent Clippd Scoreboard Ranking.
In addition to their No. 1 Clippd Scoreboard ranking, the Utes also rank No. 15 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll.
Moreover, two Utah golfers rank top-10 nationally within the most recent Clippd individual rankings. Senior David Johnson sits fifth among qualified NCAA golfers, while junior Gabriel Palacios, coming off a first-place finish at the Tindall, is the top ranked golfer in the nation.
In regard to the program's national attention, coach Clegg said, "It is early and there are a lot of tournaments left to be played…These early rankings are great, and fun to see, but we can't be distracted by these numbers right now. We are off to a good start this year, and we hope to continue things this week at the Williams Cup."
This will be the Utes first time competing in the Williams Cup.
The tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina, features a field of 14 teams, including the Auburn Tigers, who are ranked as the nation's top program in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll.
The field also includes two of the top three team finishers from last year's Williams Cup. The Tar Heels placed first in 2024 with a score of 16-under, while Auburn placed third with a team score of 12-under.
Amidst tough competition and a new course, the Utes look to continue their strong start to the season before a quick three-day turnaround sees them take on the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia, Oct. 24–26.
THE FIELD
Including the Utes, the Williams Cup will feature 14 teams all over the country.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
Utah will have five golfers compete at the Williams Cup, four are returners from last season while one is a redshirt freshman competing in his first collegiate tournament.
The Utes starting five consists of Johnson, Palacios, Brandon Robison, Sergio Jimenez and Kade McDonough.
The Williams Cup will be McDonough's first collegiate tournament after a redshirt 2024-25 season. In high school, McDonough finished top 10 at the junior America's Cup and captured a Montana individual state title his freshman year.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"Everyone is chomping at the bit to get back out on the course," said coach Clegg, "It's good to be home and practicing, but it's time to get back out on the road. The Williams Cup is a premier college golf tournament, and the competition will be a major test for our program."
"The course is exceptionally difficult, and the grass there is different from Utah. We have a lot to prove, and everyone is excited for the opportunity to travel across the country to showcase who we are."
