SEATTLE – The Utah men's basketball team closed out its non-conference slate with a 74-65 loss to the Washington Huskies inside Alaska Airlines Arena on Monday night.
Â
The Utes and Washington (9-4) traded blows in the opening minutes of the game before
Keanu Dawes tied the contest (15-15) with a smooth second-chance layup at the 11:50 mark.Â
Â
Utah (8-5) leveled the game three more times over the next three minutes as
Don McHenry made a driving layup at 11:16 to make it 17-17, drilled a three-pointer at 9:03 to even things up at 22-22, and knocked down another triple at 8:02 to knot the game at 25-25.Â
Â
Minutes later, at the 4:09 mark, freshman guard
Obomate Abbey found
Terrence Brown for an and-1 layup that gave the Utes their first lead (30-29) since the game's opening basket.Â
Â
Brown's bucket sparked a 7-0 run for Utah that was capped off by an additional basket from the junior guard that pushed the Utes' edge to 34-29 with 3:36 remaining. Brown led all players with 17 first-half points, knocking down eight of his 13 attempts in the half.Â
Â
Fueled by Brown's scoring burst, Utah maintained control in the closing minutes of the frame and carried a 37-36 advantage into the break.Â
Â
Utah's first basket of the second half would come at the 15:20 mark when freshman
Kendyl Sanders connected on a three-pointer, getting the visiting team within 45-41 of the Huskies.
Â
Despite an improved offensive attack from the Washington squad, Sanders and the Utes remained within striking distance—inching within three points of their opponent (49-46) on a fastbreak layup from
Seydou Traore at 10:39.Â
Â
Despite the attack, Washington increased its advantage by as many as nine points before the Utes rallied and cut their deficit to 61-58 by way of Sanders' three-pointer at 5:50.Â

Brown led Utah with 21 points—stuffing the stat sheet with an additional 4 assists, 4 steals, and 3 rebounds. Dawes added 17 points of his own to go along with nine rebounds.
