SAN FRANCISCO – Former Utah men's basketball forward Phil Cullen will be honored at this weekend's NBA All-Star Breakfast with the Jerry Colangelo Award at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
The award is awarded to someone who exemplifies a life of leadership, character and faith, on the court, in the home and community. His life goes beyond basketball, making an impact on those he touches. This award is presented to someone in the NBA Community.
Cullen is in his third year as the Senior Director of Basketball Operations and Organizational Development with the San Antonio Spurs and 10th season overall with the organization.
In addition to donning the Runnin' Utes jersey across his chest from 1998-2002 under legendary head coach Rick Majerus, Cullen also returned to his Alma Mater as the director of operations from 2012-16. During that time, he oversaw the construction of the first-class Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility.
During his time on the Hill, Cullen helped propel Utah to a 90-35 record – including a 28-5 mark in his freshman year. One of the Mountain West Conference's top 3-point shooters during his career, Cullen can still be found in the Utah record books and ranks 10th in career 3-pointers made (153) to go along with other single-game records.
The Washington native closed out his career with three NCAA Tournament berths, two of which resulted in a second-round appearance, one NIT appearance, a WAC regular-season and tournament championships and two Mountain West regular-season titles.
Cullen received his bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering from Utah in 2006 and earned his master's in leadership from GCU in 2012.
