LAST TIME OUT
The Utah women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Memphis on Tuesday, improving to 5-2 on the season. The Utes secured the doubles point with wins from Kamper/Roberts (7-5) and Akid/Valletta (7-6 [6]) after a tiebreak battle on the top court. In singles, Kamper (6-3, 6-3) quickly answered a Memphis win to put Utah back in front, and Valletta (6-1, 7-6 [5]) extended the lead. After the Tigers closed the gap with a win at No. 2, Barksdale sealed the match in a three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
THE UTES
Utah women's tennis enters the 2025 spring season with a roster featuring a core group of returning players blended with new talent. Returning to the team are sophomores Sara Akid and
Emma Kamper, junior
Kaila Barksdale, and senior
Samantha Horwood, all of whom contributed significantly during the 2024 season. Joining the squad this season are two transfers in
Dylan Lolofie, a Salt Lake City native from Weber State, and
Emma Valletta from Ravena, Italy, previously at VCU. This spring, the team additionally welcomed freshman
Hayley Roberts from Bradenton, Florida.
HEAD COACH RUTHANN ALLEN
The Utah women's tennis team welcomed Ruth Ann Allen as head coach this season. A Utah native and a Utah All-American and Hall of Famer, Allen returns to lead the program after a successful tenure as head coach at Weber State. She guided the Wildcats to a Big Sky Championship in 2023 and was twice named Big Sky Coach of the Year (2022, 2023).
Before Weber State, Allen spent 20 seasons as an assistant coach at Utah, where she helped the Utes secure multiple NCAA Tournament bids, two Mountain West Conference titles, and numerous top-five regional rankings. Allen, an All-American during her playing career at Utah, was inducted into the Utah Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2023.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS
SDSU enters the match with a 3-2 record following a 4-2 win over Denver. The teams have faced off eight times, with the Aztecs holding a 5-3 advantage, but Utah claimed a 4-3 victory in their last meeting back in April 2011.
SCOUTING THE TRITONS
UCSD comes into the weekend with a 2-4 overall record on the season. The Utes and Tritons have met just once before, with Utah earning a dominant 7-0 win in March of 2024.
NEXT UP
The Utes will next begin conference play in Arizona, where they will take on Arizona State on Feb. 27 and Arizona on Mar. 1.
