CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. –
Hailey Maestretti threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief over two games, but the University of Utah softball team suffered two defeats on Friday, first to the No. 19 Oregon Ducks by a score of 2-0, followed by a 3-1 loss to Long Beach State on the first day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
Utah is now 4-9 in 2025.
Utah vs. Oregon
Utah pitchers
Shelbee Jones and Maestretti kept the Utes in the game throughout by scattering eight hits and receiving some help from their defense. Jones got the start and almost immediately found herself in a bases-loaded, nobody out jam, but induced a fielder's choice groundout in which the Utes forced the runner at home, a popup and finished her escape with a strikeout.
The Ducks got on the board with homers in the second and third, but a diving catch by
Shelbi Ortiz in left got the fourth started and Maestretti entered in the fifth, quickly benefiting from a double play behind her in which
Shonty Passi snared a liner at short and forced the runner at second. Maestretti stranded two runners in scoring position in the sixth, helped by a
Kendall Lundberg pickoff, and retired the side in order in the seventh.
The best chance Utah had to even the score came in the third, thanks to a
Hailee White walk and a
Sianni Sakai double putting runners on second third with nobody out, but Oregon's Lyndsey Grein then took the mound and prevented the Utes from taking advantage of opportunity. Grein completed the contest with four more scoreless frames.
Utah vs. Long Beach State
LBSU started fast, using three first-inning singles to take a 1-0 lead, but Utah responded in the third, stringing together four straight hits. The final one, which came courtesy of
Kaylah Nelsen, sent
Reese Lee across with the run that tied the score.
Unfortunately for the Utes, they were unable to maintain that tie, as Long Beach State put a pair of runners in scoring position in the fifth and two singles later in the stanza each brought in a run, making the score 3-1. Maestretti kept LBSU at bay after that and finished the day with only three hits and one walk allowed across 5 2/3 innings of work.
The Utes brought up the tying run in both the sixth and seventh, but couldn't find the breakthrough they need to draw level.
