FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Utah softball team suffered two defeats on Friday, falling to the No. 5 LSU Tigers, 2-0, and the No. 4 UCLA Bruins, 16-4.
Utah's record is now 4-14.
Utah vs. LSU
The Utes and Tigers engaged in a pitcher's duel and Utah's
Hailey Maestretti was up for the challenge. She silenced LSU's bats and kept them off the scoreboard for the first five innings, holding them to just two hits during that span. In each of the first three stanzas, Maestretti stranded runners in scoring position to keep the contest tied.
Unfortunately for the Utes, LSU's Jayden Heavener kept them from denting home plate as well. Utah attempting to stage several rallies, including putting two runners on in the sixth, but Heavener induced a ground ball to second that ended the frame.
The Tigers scored the game's only two runs in their half of the sixth, utilizing three hits and a pair of errors to plate two unearned runs. Utah brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but the Utes were unable to erase the deficit.
Utah vs. UCLA
The Bruins offense seized the early initiative, using a pair of home runs to lead 7-0 after an inning and a half.
Utah was able push a run across in second on when singles by
Jolie Mayfield and
Emily Capobianco as well as an error loaded the bases and a
Kendall Lundberg fielder's choice plated
Shonty Passi. A walk and Capobianco's second single put a runner on third in the fourth and
Shelbi Ortiz came across on another fielder's choice to make the score 7-2.
The Utes continued battling in the fifth, putting two runners on for Passi, who laced a two-run double into right-center that pulled her squad within three. UCLA was able to respond, however, using a nine-run sixth inning to build an insurmountable lead.
