TEMPE, Ariz. –
Brooklyn Carreon and
Shelbee Jones combined to allow just four singles across seven innings and Jones earned a win in her Utah debut as the University of Utah softball team started their 2025 campaign with a 2-0 blanking of the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday morning at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
This makes three straight seasons the Utes have won their opener and the eighth time in their last nine tries.
"A shutout in the season opener feels amazing," said coach
Amy Hogue. "Brooklyn and Shelbee put us in position to win today and I am very proud of them. There were a lot of nerves this morning that our hitters were battling through. Kaylah looked like she was in mid-season form, which was fun to see. I'm looking forward to some others starting to settle in through the weekend."
In just her second career start, Carreon spent four innings squashing every scoring threat from the Golden Gophers. She worked around a lead-off walk in the first, then wriggled out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the second. After a perfect third inning, the California stranded two more runners in the fourth, completing the longest outing of her career so far, before turning the pitching chore over to Jones.
Jones also began her day with a walk, but a perfect throw from
Kendall Lundberg nailed that runner trying to steal second and, one frame later, Jones induced a double-play ball to kill another opportunity for the Golden Gophers. That helped set the stage for the only rally Utah's offense would need.
In the home half of the sixth,
Hailee White drew a base on balls to light the spark, then
Kaylah Nelsen sent a line drive into the gap in right-center for an RBI double that broke the scoreless tie. Nelsen later came around on a groundout by Lundberg and all that was left for Jones to put up one more zero to ice Utah's lid-lifting triumph.
