TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Utah softball team suffered a pair of defeats on Saturday, dropping a 10-4 decision to the No. 21 California Golden Bears and falling to the Maryland Terrapins, 7-5.
These two defeats put Utah at 1-2 in 2025.
Utah vs. California
The Utes found themselves in an early hole after the Golden Bears put together a five-run inning in the top of the second, but Utah quickly cobbled together a rally of their own to get back in the game. In the bottom of the second, a pair of Cal errors put two runners on and brought up
Kaylah Nelsen, who walloped the first pitch she saw over the fence in dead center, cutting her team's deficit to 5-3.
The Golden Bears got a run back in their half of the third, but another Utah long ball immediately sliced the difference back to two. This long ball came courtesy of
Kennedy Proctor, who blasted a solo shot to left that counted as her first collegiate hit. Unfortunately for the Utes, that would be their final run of the game.
Emily Capobianco did provide Utah with another bright spot, collected a pair of knocks for the first multi-hit game of her career.
Utah vs. Maryland
The Utes shook off an early deficit against the Terrapins, who put up the game's first run in the second. In Utah's half of the frame, a walk, an error and a single loaded the bases with one out and
Shelbi Ortiz hit a line drive into right that turned into a sacrifice fly.
Maryland spent the next few innings building a six-run advantage, tallying three in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth, but the Utes refused to fold. Their comeback attempt started with a lead-off safety from
Jolie Mayfield in the bottom of the fifth, her first career hit, and
Shonty Passi brought her home by punching a base hit into center.
In the sixth, Utah went to work again. A pair of walks got the rally started, then
Hailee White smacked a single to center for an RBI. The Utes added another run on a wild pitch, then Passi's second single of the day plated White to reduce the deficit to two. A walk later in the frame did bring up the go-ahead run and Utah also loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but the Terrapins escaped both jams to claim the win.
