TEMPE, Ariz. –
Hailey Deter and
Shonty Passi both collected four hits, drove in multiple runs and the University of Utah softball team staged a pair of late comebacks, first vanquishing the Miami (OH) Redhawks in extra innings, 7-6, then roaring back against the Minnesota Golden Gophers for a 9-8 triumph on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic, which concluded on Sunday at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
These two wins boost Utah's record to 3-2, the third straight year they've finished the season's opening weekend with a winning record.
"Winning both today was so big for us," said coach Amy Hogue. "We didn't play clean, that's for sure, but we found a way to win which is what matters.
"I have learned a lot about our team already and one thing is we can score with lots of different hitters. The RBI's were spread out and that's always a good thing."
Utah vs. Miami (OH)
The Utes were the first team on the board against the RedHawks, scoring in the second courtesy of a Passi single and a Deter RBI double, but Miami responded with a three-run third to move ahead.
A run-scoring single by Passi pulled Utah to within 3-2 in the sixth, then they seized the lead in the seventh. A
Kayla Lyon safety got the frame started and
Hailee White and
Shelbi Ortiz followed with hits of their own, plating pinch-runner
Marley Espiau with the tying run. White came across one play later when she tagged on a deep fly to center, taking third, then raced home thanks to an error. Ortiz scored an insurance run on a wild pitch.
The RedHawks evened the score in their half of the seventh and pitcher
Shelbee Jones soon found herself in a jam with the winning run on third and nobody out. Unfazed, the sophomore hurler struck out three straight hitters to escape with the score still level.
Another RBI knock by Passi pushed the visitors back in front in the top of the eighth, only for the RedHawks to tie it up again. The Utes found what would be the game's final run in the ninth, when White lifted a sacrifice fly into right and Jones followed that by setting down three straight hitters to lock up the win.
Utah vs. Minnesota
For the second straight contest, the Utes dented home plate first, with a
Jolie Mayfield RBI single in the second making the score 1-0. The Golden Gophers offense put together a response in the third, capped by Sydney Schwartz's two-run homer, which put Utah at a 4-1 disadvantage.
The Utes answered back swiftly, however, using their half of the third to forge a tie. Base hits by White and
Kaylah Nelsen and a fielder's choice brought up
Kennedy Proctor with the sacks full and when she lashed a double into left, two runners touched home and Utah was within one. That slim margin was erased seconds later, when Passi added the tying tally on a wild pitch.
After the Golden Gophers snuck back ahead by a 5-4 score, the Utes exploded for five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. A two-bagger from Nelsen and a single by Passi lit the fuse and Proctor's second double of the game pushed the tying run across. The go-ahead score came in thanks to Deter's third hit of the afternoon, a single to right, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Mayfield and a two-run knock off the bat of
Reese Lee capped the uprising and staked Utah to a 9-5 edge.
That lead was threatened in the sixth, as Minnesota scored three times and put the go-ahead run on base, but
Hailey Maestretti induced a grounder to third that kept her team's slim advantage intact. The freshman southpaw retired the side in order in the seventh and Utah completed a 2-0 day.
"I thought Brooklyn was very sharp with the innings she had for us," said Hogue. "She is our most veteran pitcher, even with limited innings before this season. She spots the ball very well and is very efficient.
"I'm looking forward to getting settled defensively as we move into weekend number two. We have lots of new players and they are going to need some time together."
Up Next
The next destination on the schedule for the Utes is Fresno, Calif., where they'll take the field six times in four days, starting with games against UC Santa Barbara and LMU on Friday.
