Mayfield Homers Twice, but Utah Falls, 8-6

Freshman third baseman drives in five, but Utah defeated by No. 11 Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – Jolie Mayfield blasted a pair of home runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam, but the University of Utah softball team fell a couple runs short, losing 8-6 to the No. 11 Arizona Wildcats on Saturday evening at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Utah falls to 8-21 on the season.
The Wildcats quickly grabbed the lead, using a pair of runs in the first and three more in the second to build a 5-0 advantage, but Utah did its best to chip away at the deficit.
The visitors got a run of their own in the second, when, with the bases loaded, Sianni Sakai sent an RBI single through the middle and Mayfield pulled her team to within 5-2 one frame later with her first round-tripper of the day, a solo shot to left.
Arizona continued to tack on however, adding a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, but Mayfield got her side back into the game in the sixth. The Utes used a single, an error and a walk to pack the sacks with two outs and Utah's third baseman put a charge into an 0-2 offering, sending it out to right for Utah's second four-run four-bagger of the season. That was as close as Utah would get however, as a scoreless seventh secured the win for the Wildcats.
Mayfield is the first Ute to homer twice in a game since two Utah players accomplished that feat at Oregon on May 6, 2023 and her five RBIs are the program's most for one player since May 19, 2023 vs. Southern Illinois.
