TUCSON, Ariz. –
Shelbi Ortiz set a new career-high with three hits, but the University of Utah softball team was defeated by the No. 11 Arizona Wildcats on Sunday by a score of 3-0 in Big 12 Conference action at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
The Utes are 8-22 in 2025.
Both pitchers started off strong, including Utah's
Shelbee Jones, who struck out a pair in the first and induced a double play that closed out the second, but the Wildcats got on the board with a run in the third and added two-run homer in the fourth.
Utah's best scoring opportunities in the early innings came in the second and the fourth, as they put two runners on both times, but Arizona pitchers Saya Swain and Devin Netz were able to navigate out of trouble each time.
Jones and fellow hurler
Hailey Maestretti kept their team in the game by holding the home team scoreless over the last two innings and they receiving some help from a Utah defense that turned three double plays, including one in the fifth and another in the sixth. On offense, the Utes brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, but that was as close as they would come to evening the score, as the Wildcats set down Utah in order in the seventh.

The Utes will take the field at home for the first time on Thursday, when they'll host Saint Mary's at 3 p.m.
