Capobianco’s Walk-Off Homer Caps Wild Utah Comeback

Utes roar back from down 8-1, win in extras 13-10
SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah softball team wiped out a seven-run deficit, their largest comeback in more than a decade, and Emily Capobianco blasted a three-run, walk-off homer in the ninth inning to put a bow on a 13-10 Utah victory over the Kansas Jayhawks in Big 12 Conference action on Friday evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah is now 9-22 in 2025.
Kansas' offense wasted no time building a big lead, starting with a two-run Olivia Bruno triple in the first. The Utes countered with an unearned run in their half of the first, but three Jayhawk homers over the next two frames put the home team in an 8-1 hole.
Despite the deficit, Utah refused to go away. They tallied two in the bottom of the third on a Kennedy Proctor RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Kayla Lyon. In the fifth, the home team loaded the bases again and Lyon pulled her squad to within 8-5 by rapping two-run double off the wall in left. When Shonty Passi followed by lacing her own two-bagger into right-center, two more Utes came across to make the score 8-7.
The visitors managed to plate two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, then retired the first to Utes in the bottom half, but the Utes found a way to tie the score. Passi worked a walk, Taylor Jacobs doubled and Kaylah Nelsen drew another base on balls. An RBI single off the bat of Capobianco tallied one run and Jolie Mayfield tied the game one pitch later by lining two-run knock into left.
In each of the next two stanzas, Utah pitcher Shelbee Jones kept Kansas off the scoreboard and that set up Capobianco's moment in the bottom of the ninth. An error and a walk brought her to plate and when she sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right-center, Utah's comeback was officially complete.
Utah and Kansas will meet again on Saturday with first pitch again scheduled for 4 p.m.

"I hope a lot of people stuck around and saw that entire game," said coach Amy Hogue, what a fun one to watch." It had a little bit of everything and a walk-off home run by Capo to seal the deal. I was really proud of her today. She came up clutch earlier in the game and had a chance in a couple good counts to wrap it up and jumped on that 3-1 pitch and send it out of the yard.
"Brooklyn [Carreon]'s innings were huge for us. Those three zeroes she put up allowed time for the team to rally and come within one. She was a critical piece to that comeback. After we caught them in the seventh, I had a good feeling we were going to get it done somehow, especially with how Shelbee [Jones] came in and closed the door."
