SALT LAKE CITY –
Shelbee Jones and
Brooklyn Carreon combined to hold the Kansas Jayhawks to two runs on four hits across seven innings and the University of Utah softball team clinched its first series victory in the Big 12 conference, topping the Kansas Jayhawks, 5-2, on Saturday evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Back-to-back wins improve Utah's 2025 record to 10-22.
"I'm proud of the way we won today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "We had a goal to throw the first punch and we did that. We had very timely hitting with all but one of our runs scored with two outs. And our pitching and defense was phenomenal. Our first Big 12 series win! I'm happy for this group."
Utah's lineup quickly secured some run support for their hurlers, putting two runners on with two outs in the first and
Kennedy Proctor sent both runners across by slicing a double into right-center. Two more runs came across in the fourth when
Kayla Lyon dunked an RBI single into center and scored three batters later on an error.
Kaylah Nelsen pushed the home team's advantage to 5-0 with a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Jones got the start in the circle and made sure the Jayhawks could never mount a serious threat to the Utes' lead. She stranded two runners in the first, then retired the side in order in each of the next three frames, striking out a batter in each stanza. She permitted a run in the fifth, but held the Kansas rally there to keep the score at 5-1.
After the lead-off batter reached in the sixth and took second on a wild pitch, Carreon relieved Jones and proved to be just as effective. She started her outing with a strikeout, then induced a fly ball out that did allowed the runner to come around, but ended the inning with a popup. The sophomore right-hander followed that with a scoreless seventh to ice Utah's second straight home triumph.
