Proctor Homers Again, but Utes Fall, 5-2

Utah drops series finale despite catcher’s team-best fifth homer
SALT LAKE CITY – Kennedy Proctor launched her third home run in two games, but it wasn't enough as the University of Utah softball team dropped the finale of their three-game series with the Houston Cougars, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah is 12-24 in 2025 with a 4-5 Big 12 record. The Utes have won each of their last two Big 12 series.
The afternoon started with two scoreless frames, but Houston broke the tie with a four-run third that included back-to-back two-out RBI hits. The Cougars stretched their lead to 5-0 with an insurance run in the fourth.
Utah had chances to get on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth, moving runners to third in both frames, but no clutch hit was forthcoming. The sixth inning is when the home team broke through, thanks to the red-hot bat of Proctor. With a runner on, the freshman catcher put a charge into one for a two-run homer that pulled the Utes to within 5-2.
In the seventh, Utah threatened to make another miraculous comeback, with back-to-back lead-off singles bringing up the tying run. Unfortunately for the home team, the next three hitters went down in order to end the afternoon.
Up Next
Utah will now take a trip to Lubbock, Texas for three games against Texas Tech, with the opener being played on Friday at 5 p.m. MT.
