LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Utah softball team suffered a pair of defeats to the No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday, falling by scores of 9-1 and 3-0 in Big 12 Conference action at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas.
Utah is 12-26 overall in 2025 and 4-7 in the Big 12.
Game One
The Utes had the difficult assignment of going against reigning National Player of the Year Nijaree Canady, who started in the circle for the home team, but
Emily Capobianco quickly dented home plate for Utah with a solo homer to right, just the third dinger allowed by Canady in 2025.
Unfortunately for the visitors, that lead was short-lived, as a two-out rally by Texas Tech gave the home side a 3-1 lead after one frame. The Red Raiders then used another run in the third, three more in the fourth and two in the fifth to seal a run-rule victory.
Game Two
Utah's pitching and defense kept them in the second game all the way, starting with a first inning in which
Hailey Maestretti worked out of a first-and-third, nobody out jam. The Utes recorded the final out when
Hailee White threw out a runner at the plate on an attempted double steal.
After a scoreless second in which the Utes threw out another runner on the basepaths, Texas Tech pushed across the game's first run in the third. In the fourth, Utah nailed two more runners at the dish, but a second Red Raider run made the score 2-0 and a solo homer in the sixth put the hosts ahead by three.
Despite hits from
Kennedy Proctor and
Kaylah Nelsen, the Utes could not find a run against Canady, who went the distance for the victory.
