LUBBOCK, Texas –
Kennedy Proctor and
Shonty Passi staked the University of Utah softball team to an early lead with a pair of home runs, but the Utes ultimately dropped a 7-4 decision to the No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas.
Utah's 2025 record is now 12-27 and they are 4-8 in the Big 12.
Utah used the first inning to build an early lead and their first scoring opportunity came when back-to-back singles brought up Proctor with one out. The freshman catcher lifted a long fly to center that soared over the wall for her team-high sixth homer of the season. A solo shot to the opposite field by Passi two batters later gave the Utes a first-inning four-spot.
The home team pushed across a run in the bottom of the first, but Utah starter
Shelbee Jones stranded two runners in that frame, then got out of a bases loaded situation in the second when Proctor caught a runner off third for the final out.
Utah's greatest escape of the day came in third after Texas Tech loaded the bases with nobody out. Jones got the first out thanks to an Alana Johnson lineout to third, but it looked like the Red Raiders had their second run of the game moments later when a pitch by Jones sailed to the backstop. Proctor retrieved the errant offering and her on-target toss to Jones nailed the runner at the plate for out No. 2.
Brooklyn Carreon then took over in the circle and recorded the final out of the third to keep the Utes ahead, 4-1.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Texas Tech mounted another threat in the fifth and took advantage to the tune of four runs to move in front by one. Utah put the tying run on base in the sixth, but that was as close as they would come to evening the score.
Up Next
The next time the Utes take the field, they'll be at home opening up a three-game series against Arizona State, with game one being played at 5 p.m. on Friday.
