RENO, Nev. – The Utah Ski Team began a four-day race series at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe on Saturday with slalom races that took place as RMISA individual qualifiers. Nevada hosted the events, but no team scores were kept since the races were not part of a meet.
Melanie Dahlberg earned her first college podium result, taking bronze in the women's event with a total time of 1:37.83. Dahlberg put herself in good position early, throwing down an opening run of 46.84 seconds which had her in second place.
For the men,
Johs Braathen Herland led the way with a second-place performance (1:35.56) that saw Herland in the same position at the midday flip. He has skied to the podium in all five of his starts this season.
Utah also had
Harry Hoffman and
Sindre Myklebust in the men's top seven after the opening run, but it was a challenging day across the field as just 20 athletes finished out of the 44 that started the first run. The women's race had 21 finishers of 38 who started.
"First and foremost, I want to congratulate Nevada on putting on a first-class environment for racing," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "It is so great for the growth of our sport to have college racing taking place out here again, and for there to be a band and flyover today was just incredible for the athletes and fans.
"We typically ski well as a team but I think today was uncharacteristic. However, for Melanie to get her first college podium was so cool. She has been doing everything right and it's nice to see her rewarded for that. It was a challenging second run for the guys, but Johs managed it well and could see everything that was going on."
