LIHUE, Hawaii — The reigning co-champion Utah men's golf team opened defense of its 2025 John A. Burns Intercollegiate title on Monday, Feb. 12, with a strong opening round that saw one of its players take sole possession of first-place after 18 holes of action.
No Ute fared better during a rainy opening day of "The Burns" than
Sergio Jimenez, who overcame Lihue, Kauai's damp conditions to take the title of tournament leader after a 4-under 66 opening round.
Jimenez, who began his day on the par-4 third hole of the Ocean Course, started strong with back-to-back birdies on holes eight and nine. The junior from Spain continued his steady play as the round progressed, avoiding major mistakes and carding three additional birdies down the stretch to earn him the special distinction of having the tournament's lowest round of the day.
Mid-season transfer
Jack Jerge carded Utah's second-lowest round of the day with a 1-over 71, good enough for T32
ndplace. Jerge's round would be one of resilience, as the junior followed up an opening-nine score of 2-over 37 with an improved back-nine total of 1-under 34.
Davis Johnson finished his afternoon in T47
th place with a final score of 2-over 72. The Arizona native started his day off strong with a birdie on the second and continued to play steady par golf for the majority of his round. A triple-bogey on the 18
th would prove to be a slight setback, but Johnson showed poise by ending his day with a par on the first (his final hole of the round).
Brandon Robison (T70
th) rounded out the Utes' scoring group with a score of 4-over 74. Meanwhile,
Gabriel Palacios, one of the tournament's reigning individual champions, closed his first day in T77
th with a first-round score of 5-over 75.
Jan Farre, playing as an individual for Utah, finished his day with a 7-over 77, in T96
th place.
As a team, the Utes will enter day two of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in 10
th place at 3-over 283. Utah is only seven strokes behind the day one leader, the LMU Lions, who sit in first place at 4-under 276.
